I think I did an OK job sorting my mess of eBooks. Deleted a lot of computer-related Humble Bundles I'm never gonna read, and went with: Genre > Author Last, First > Title - Author First Last > Title - Author First Last.ext

The top level genre directories seem sensible enough, and the rest of the names have enough context for me to find them in search.

Now to sort the rest of the scifi/fantasy Humble Bundles that I kept...

Most of these directories contain authors, but more technical topics don't group by author. I could group by subtopic instead?

Chances are in six months I will hate this layout, and all its flaws will be obvious to me.

(Would accept advice if you have a better system.)

@annika How close do you need to remain to a strictly-plain-folder-hierarchy model (ex. for portability reasons)?

Would you consider using macOS' tags to add extra context/layers where needed?

Would you consider using Calibre for managing your library?

@lamnatos I do like to keep it pretty portable. This directory is in Syncthing with clients on 4 different OSes.

Calibre feels a little rough around the edges and at the end of the day, I need the directory structure to be navigable without an app

@annika You're right, a managed library (even if the folder structure stays untouched) wouldn't play nice with multiple clients and syncing.

Have you thought about "encoding" extra info in the book's filename? For example `Title - Author First Last - Genre(s) - Topic(s).ext`, you could then filter/group/search filenames as you like?
