It appears that Threads is working on a Communities feature called "Loop", which might be similar to subreddits or X Communities.
All I can tell is that you'll be able to Join and Leave. 
This is new as of Threads v352.0.0.
@chrismessina We have something similar on the backburner called "groups". Can't imagine why it would be called loops though.

@Gargron @chrismessina Do you have some more information on Mastodon Groups? As far as I understand it, nothing happened with it since the PR of October 2022, and I kinda assume it was scrapped. But I'm taking it this is still planned?

@Gargron Well... "Threads" can be spun into "Loops"? 
Also, seems like it matches Reels?
