Xmonad deserves a go. I can't use i3 because it is
so Limited. It is perhaps easier, but I don't know. I didn't know Haskell but I did it anyway. I've been on #Xmonad for more than a decade and I have yet to see anything better.
i3 is a backup I use while setting up my xmonad that I can't wait to get out of. Xmonad is like the emacs of window managers. Of course there is Exwm. But that might take you a minute or two.

Anybody have Wayland-compatibile tiling compositor (WM) recommenddations? I'd been using #xmonad for years, but it doesn't work with Wayland. #KDE #Plasma with #bismuth was good for me, but Bismuth doesn't work with latest Plasma. I've really not found anything good with Gnome, and the options like #sway and #hyprland require a bunch of time to configure and don't do things like remembering what to do when I plug in different external monitors like KDE does. I appreciate KDE's automation.

@Riedler This is timely. I'd been using #xmonad for years, but it doesn't work well with Wayland. #KDE #Plasma with #bismuth was good for me, but Bismuth doesn't work with the latest KDE.

Last change on the software side of my dev setup was to start using #PaperWM. It’s so awesome! It’s fast, smooth, has exactly what I need from a window manager, and it’s rock solid. In the past I’ve been using #awesomewm, #xmonad, #i3wm and while I liked them all better than classic floating WMs, only PaperWM feels exactly like what I always needed. And, on a 120hz display its quick animations look fantastic.

Tiling window manager users and fans: Do you find tiling workflow to work for you better on a larger screen or on a smaller one? For example do you find laptop screens to be best utilized with tiling workflow or do you see tiling as means of operation that gives you more advantage the bigger the screen canvas is? Let's say 43". Or maybe you find some screens to be too large for tiling to make sense?

@RxBrad

I went back to gnome after probably almost 10 years of #FluxBox and a handful of years of #xmonad

I went back to Gnome, because instead of tiling, the workspace system combined with maximized-windows/fullscreen-windows is sufficient for my usage

When tiling is needed, I can use #tmux #screen #zellij : but I don't use them that much this way, only for named terminal sessions

Gnome is a default go-to solution that is worth my not-spending time on those configs

I made the similar movement to declutter and minimize my configuration of Vim, so as I can be efficient on any Vi on any computer

And I prefer Gnome over KDE, namely because KDE feels really too much like Windows: uppercut KO :-) I have fought you

This account had been sitting empty for a year as I didn't have the spoons to restart on the fedi after my old instance went down so this will be my #introduction

Since desktop environments can always change and many new releases came out since last year, I would like to know which desktop environment you currently use?

#gnome #kdeplasma #xfce4 #cinnamondesktop #matedesktop #budgiedesktop #lxqt #linuxdesktop #linux #freebsd #openbsd #netbsd #i3wm #bspwm #xmonad #dwm #fvwm #qtile #wayland #xorg

* Multiple choices possible

I held out pretty long on #xorg, mostly because I sincerely loved #xmonad. I've been using it since… oh, well, let's ask git log… uh. 2007! That's 14 fucking years of my life where it was my main way of interacting with a computer!

But the quirkiness and bugs got too many, and I went to #wayland, which was painful. But after some bang-ups, I've found #hyprland, and I'm quite happy with it! I can get *most* of what I loved about Xmonad, plus it looks nice.
