Sometimes I strongly miss the weekly column of Uri Avnery, who co-founded Gush Shalom and did many other things, like visiting Arafat when it was a big, big taboo.

If any society is torn apart, it is the Israeli one. There is no homogeneous society of Zionists there, but many different tendencies. Judaists who want coexistence, the #GushShalom movement that has been actively campaigning for coexistence for decades, the #PeaceNow movement that has demonstrated in their hundreds of thousands for the #twostatesolution, many Israeli companies that rely on Palestinian labour. Some of them have also exploited them, but not all of them. - Hamas is responsible for indescribably cruel massacres and there is not a single justification for them. But on Israel's side the only person currently responsible for the dimension of the war is #Netanyahu, who is in coalition with radical right-wing Zionists. This insane war helps him to maintain his inhuman regime and his power. First the population must free itself from this far-right despot, only then can there be a ceasefire and at some point finally a #twostatesolution. There is no other way.

Violence is part of the resistance to occupation. The basic fact is not the violence; the basic fact is the occupation. Violence is a symptom; the occupation is the disease - a mortal disease for everybody concerned, the occupied and the occupiers.

He founded Peace Now and has spent decades working for peaceful Judaism and coexistence with the Palestinians and spoke out against aggressive Zionism.

I had the honour to meet Uri Avnery and Rachel Avnery 2002 in Oldenburg where he was awarded the Carl von Ossietzky Prize for Contemporary History and Politics. .
