A stem cell treatment helped improve the motor function of 2 out of 4 patients with a spinal cord injury in the first clinical study of its kind, Japanese scientists said. https://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2025/03/22/japan/science-health/ips-spinal-cord-injuries/?utm_medium=Social&utm_source=mastodon #japan #sciencehealth #ips #stemcells #health #medicine #biotechnology #keiouniversity
A first-of-its-kind stem cell transplant has changed the life of a man who was left blind in one eye following a firework accident. He remembers the moment when he walked into his Airbnb in Massachusetts and could see the bright blue color of his comforter. At that time, he was about eight months out from his firework injury. "I'll never forget [that moment]," Nick Kharufeh said. "And it sounds so little. It's just like, 'Okay, a little blue comforter.' But in that moment that was everything to me, and I literally cried for so long." Read more about the surgery and Kharufeh’s recovery @LiveScience:

Type 1 diabetes develops when the body destroys its own insulin-producing cells.
Using stem cells to replace them could be a way to get around donor shortages and transplant complications. Here’s how:

Scientists recreate mouse stem cells f. gene older than animal life
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/11/241118125716.htm
* unicellular Sox, POU transcription factors
* created mouse stem cells capable of gen. fully dev. mouse
* reshapes understanding of genetic/evol. origins of stem cells
* poss. critical for advent of stem cells, multicellularity
Emergence of Sox & POU transcript. factors predates origins of animal stem cells

Researchers challenge longstanding theories in cellular reprogramming
https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2024/11/241101123641.htm
* claim: neural crest stem cells = source of reprogrammed neurons found by other researchers
* refutes: any developed cell can be induced to switch identity to completely unrelated cell type thru infusion of transcription factors
Neural crest precursors f. skin are primary source of directly reprogrammed neurons

Good article, but it might be helpful to use the term "blood stem cell" intead of just "stem cell".
Just this week my daughter was taught at school that "stem cells can make every cell type". My daughter volunteered that adult stem cells only make cells within their own tissue (*proud mum* ). Teacher told her that she was getting confused
This matters. There are still many exploitative disproved rogue therapies that feed on this misconception.
