I'm trying to setup a #self_hosted mail server with #mailcow.
What I don't understand is that can I have my web interface on mail.mysite.org but my email addresses look like user@mysite.org without that mail. subdomain.
I'm sure that answer is yes. But what records do I insert then in my dns records?
And how #mailcow will understand that setup? Will it have problems with web interface on a subdomain but email addresses on the domain without subdomain?

After two days of trying to get #nextcloud_aio up and running I officially give up and consider using usual old and stable manual installation method with php, db and webserver.
I thought that #Nextcloud did something awesome and cool but sorry, I get some kind of Microsoft feeling trying to use it.
1. AIO is designed primarily to be single service on the server. For home servers this sucks.
2. AIO master interface is designed to be used only in local network and it is pain opening it to the internet. Nextcloud team just decided that this must work like that.
3. Logs are not informative at all.
4. Containers just randomly stop and try to start endlessly without any single error in logs.
5. AIO interface looks minimalistic but hangs my screenreader and browser rendering it unusable for a minute after every click.

Probably at some point it becomes better but for now I'd not recommend it to anyone.

No, it doesn’t. There’s a blog article the lead dev wrote that addresses that concern, and last I checked, he had no plans to federate or decentralize #RevoltChat, butt it is #FOSS and is #self_hosted if you like, with bridging development ongoing.

To meet your needs however, yes I wholeheartedly recommend #Matrix.

Awesome Matrix clients include #SchildiChat, #FluffyChat, and of course, #Element. There’s #WeeChat client to but doesn’t support encrypted rooms.

Ask the best!

I was about to write an article on the surreal experience of hosting your own mail server in 2022, but this guy has already written all the things that I wanted to write.

I find it surreal that email is one of the oldest protocols on the Internet, one of the most openly documented, and yet a very small group of actors (with Google and Microsoft on the front line) have managed to make it impossible to self-host. I've also bounced through a lot of the holes mentioned by the author of the article, and I've also got the same impression: everything in the world of email services is designed to only benefit a small subset of actors and discard emails from anybody else. Spam checks are very robust and effective nowadays, but why bother to run them when you can just blacklist the whole IP subnet of a VPS provider with no explanation, and make sure that your friends in your illegal cartel do the same?

My current solution is to use ProtonMail with my own domains linked to it, run the bridge on my VPS, tunnel the IMAP and SMTP ports over SSH on my VPN, and use that as my private mail server. But it's a workaround, and I'm not entirely happy with it. I wish I could just run my Postfix server to manage my domains and send emails like it's 2005. Unfortunately, that's not possible: if you want to use email today either you pay someone for the service, or you accept that your private communications are stored on Google's or Microsoft's servers. Even if you have the skills to run your own server, you no longer have that choice. And it's time for @FRA to break this mafia.

The list of web services under my "#self_hosted cloud" bookmarks folder has grown quite a bit since I started my diaspora away from big clouds.

It definitely took some effort, but I feel like the #FOSS products that I use today are on par (if not better in some cases) with what is provided by most of the commercial or surveillance-based solutions out there. With the difference that everything runs in my closet or on a #Linode VPS.

Do you use or recommend any alternatives to the products in this list?

Well shit howdie!

Reports are starting to trickle in now about how this has actually been in the wild for a while and now folks are experiencing active exploits and being #pwn3d.... Not good, even for a shitty software platform that NO ONE should be using in the first place - What are you thinking?

Le's see... um.... #NextCloud_Talk, #Matrix, #XMPP, #Big_Blue_Button, #Jitsi - there's no shortage of #self_hosted #secure #FOSS solutions so, bottom line:

If you EVER use Zoom, you're a fucking idiot!
