You don't remember entering the raffle but the kind old woman, Gwendolyn, on the phone assured you you had. How else would she have your details? You had been hesitant at first but she explained everything to you - the history of the island and its castle - all off-grid except for one ancient landline in the kitchen. How it was used by her family as private hunting grounds, the transportation there by ferry and bringing supplies for the weekend, - by the end it was like talking to an old friend and you just couldn't say no.
The crossing there was interesting. Was it seasickness or was the uneasy feeling coming from the ferryman? He wouldn't look you in the eye and spent all his time muttering under his breath, ignoring you. Was he praying? "Bring another one"? Huh?
At least the castle was comfortable. Exploring the island, finally having some peace and quiet after all these hard months was much needed.
Sunday evening, the landline rings.
"I'm sorry dear but the ferry isn't coming for a while"
You inquire if that means a few hours or tomorrow.
"... I'm sorry dear but the ferry isn't coming."
You are confused.
"We still use it as hunting grounds, you know."
The line goes dead.

From your window you see the street lamp across the road is flickering. Bit weird. You've never seen it do that before. Wait... You see a figure. Is that a person? No. It's just the flickering. No, hold on, it is a person. They'll catch their death out there! It's so cold. Wait, those "Missing" posters around the neighbourhood for that kid - What if it's him? You have to go out and check. God, it's been days, he might be hurt! You walk briskly towards the street lamp. The air is freezing. You get closer "Hey! Are you okay?" "Hello! Do you need any help?". The figure turns towards you. Your blood runs colder than the air around you. It stares. It's not the missing kid. It's the reason he is missing. Oh God. How fast can you run? How fast can it run?

For this #monochromemonday post: Building 93 at the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center, a defunct New York State-run psychiatric hospital on the North Shore of Long Island that was open from 1885-1996. This particular building was a patient ward building, 13 stories tall, and built from 1939-1940, and opened to patients in 1941. It was vacated for good in 1992, a few years ahead of the complete closure of the hospital campus but by then, only the first four floors were actually being used. I’m generally way more into fantasy, sci-fi and dystopian fiction than any other genre – except perhaps some of Anne Rice’s works/adaptations.
