oh shoot, didn't know that Questlove's Sly Stone documentary was dropping so soon. Later this week: 2/13, on Hulu! I know what I'm doing!

Sly is EVERYTHING. So significant musically, culturally... and also, selfishly, enormously significant in my own musical make-up.

Although I have no doubt Quest does him justice with this, I really hope it is light on the talking heads, heavy on historical footage.

And while I appreciate using contemporary figures to explain someone's significance, please keep it relevant. The best of the best, please. (Looks like D'Angelo is featured. That's what I'm talking about.)

But what was I missing? Was I missing En Vogue’s version only, or the musical lineage it represented? “Giving Him Something He Can Feel” was not a new song, but a cover of a 1976 hit sung by Aretha Franklin, written and produced by Curtis Mayfield, from the album Sparkle. Aretha and Curtis had been major figures of the 1960s and early ’70s, but the mid-’70s found them both slightly adrift as solo artists. Just slightly. She was still one of the biggest female soul singers in America, maybe even at the top of the heap, but no longer at the top of her game.

Mayfield, for his part, had cooled as a solo artist as well, instead taking up refuge in a series of soundtracks that followed Super Fly (see 1972): he did Claudine with Gladys Knight and the Pips in 1974 and Let’s Do It Again with the Staple Singers in 1975. So the pairing on Sparkle made sense, even more so given that it, too, was a soundtrack.

Directed by Sam O’Steen, a legendary film editor (The Graduate, Chinatown) who was maybe a little less legendary as a director—this was his only feature—the movie told the story of a girl group from the late ’50s and early ’60s riven by personality conflicts and struggling with the fact that their lead singer’s obvious star power and future as a solo act was jeopardizing their existence.

Sparkle has several significant pleasures and several moments that misfire. The music is a massive asset, particularly “Something He Can Feel” (the original carries that slightly shorter title). But it’s a strange asset ... The song doesn’t sound like the era (or the group) it’s supposed to represent, which probably accounts for its success (it topped the soul chart and went Top Thirty pop) but definitely accounts for its overall sense of strangeness. It’s like seeing your reflection through a pair of funhouse mirrors that offset each other and almost, but not quite, return the image to normal.

And that’s only the original. When En Vogue decided to record the song sixteen years later as a standalone piece, they added more mirrors. They were a group in the ’90s covering a song from the ’70s that pretends to be set in the ’60s—the result is both a master class in the differences between those eras and proof of the power of an enduring song—not to mention a legitimate girl group covering a song by a solo star about a girl group struggling with the emergence of a solo star. When you listen to the 1992 version, you’re hearing a Rubik’s Cube of history, and an unsolved one at that. (Oh, sorry: ’80s reference.) Is the original song really a reflection of ’60s ideas and styles, or of ’70s ideas about ’60s ideas and styles? Which are more prominent in the ’90s version, if either?

There’s a coda, which is that En Vogue fell victim to the Sparkle syndrome themselves. Dawn Robinson, who would have been considered the lead singer, left the group in 1997 for a solo career.

There’s a coda to the coda, too. In 2012, a group of Black music stars, old, new, and in between, came together to film a new version of Sparkle, keeping much of the original movie’s structure and many of the names. There’s still a Sparkle, this time played by the closely named Jordin Sparks, who had won the sixth season of American Idol back in 2007. There are sisters, played by Carmen Ejogo and Tika Sumpter. There’s a Stix played by Derek Luke. The mother of the girls, played by Mary Alice in the original movie, is played by Whitney Houston in her last acting role, twenty years after her debut in The Bodyguard, which spawned the best-selling soundtrack album of all time.

The second movie includes a performance of “Something He Can Feel” (back to the original title now—respect for 1976) that is as much a tribute to the En Vogue video as anything (respect for 1992). If Vertigo wasn’t already taken as a title, this movie should have used it.
