Bjørn Sætrevik<p>Imagine you preregistered your study with directed hypotheses, but did not specify one-tailed or two-tailed testing. Result A is in the predicted direction but p = .05-.09. Result B is in the non-predicted direction but p &lt; .05. Do you report:</p><p><a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/PreRegistration" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>PreRegistration</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/OpenScience" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>OpenScience</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/NHST" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>NHST</span></a> <a href="https://fediscience.org/tags/SignificanceTesting" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SignificanceTesting</span></a></p>

Peter Suber<p>PS: I'm sympathetic to those short on time or caught up in job changes. But those pointing to <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23nullresults" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#nullresults</a> didn't understand the point of <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23preregistration" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#preregistration</a>. Those whose submissions were rejected by journals could still share the results as <a class="hashtag" href="https://bsky.app/search?q=%23preprints" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#preprints</a>.</p>

Workshop: Introduction to Open Science and Pre-Registration - 12 December 2024

UM is on a mission to become a leading example of the Open Science movement, which aims to make research, including papers, data, methods, etc., open to anyone so we can all benefit.

This story was even stranger than I first assumed.

Prominent open-science proponents co-authored a preregistered study that appeared to indicated that #preregistration (and other #OpenScience practices) lead to #ReproducibleResearch. After substantial discussion, the paper was just retracted.

The issue is summarized by Andrew Gelman @statmodeling_bot here:
