On the right, Jay (see previous post). On the left, a young 19 year old guy we met, "crazier" than us. Started walking on the road in Vancouver to head back to Montreal. Thousands of kms in, he bought some rollerblades and poles and went along gliding on the shoulder listening to beats in a quasi-dancing fashion. He slept in the ditch in his clothes with no tent. Great smile and positive attitude!

Nature & wildlife photos... Are you sick of #jackrabbit / #hare pictures yet?

These were taken yesterday, 2025-01-27, in my snow-covered yard in the middle of the #Canadian #prairies. They're white-tailed jackrabbits.

#1 was shot through a railing with vertical supports, explaining the light/dark striping. I like the alternating #overexposure it gives, really highlighting the detail of the eye that would otherwise be darker, and also the whiskers against the background. Any more-experienced #photographers care to comment on the #bokeh here?

#2 is Not Amused at the presence of a human in "his" yard. If looks could kill.

A white-tailed jackrabbit (a kind of hare) is seen sitting in 1/4 view, with his head turned to the side so that one eye is fully visible. He has his white winter coat, with the dark markings on the ears and around the muzzle. The detail of the eye is quite easy to see because it is in one of the overexposed stripes of the picture (from shooting through a railing with vertical supports), revealing detail that would have otherwise been too dark. That eye appears to be pointing pretty much directly back at the photographer. He is keeping his eye on me. The background of the photo is completely blurred but darker, so individual white hairs sticking out from the hare's profile stand out clearly.

He is looking directly at the photographer. Their normal facial expression, such as it is, resembles disapproval (see "disapproving rabbits" as a meme), so this one appears to be Not Amused.

White-tailed #jackrabbits (which are actually a type of #hare, not #rabbit) in the #prairies of western #Canada, yesterday around my house...

#1: sitting in my backyard, looking towards the chain-link fence which separates it from the green space beyond. This one looks like he's surveying his domain. I'm not sure if he's happy or wondering "Is this all there is?"

#2: in my front yard, #inspectimigating something on the ground to assess its possible #edibility. He's also keeping a watchful eye on one of the other jacks sitting quite close by - hares are solitary and territorial, and if they get too close to each other, they'll "box" or chase each other off. It's really something to see if you think all #bunnies are cute and fuzzy and nice...

A white-tailed jackrabbit, which is a kind of hare rather than a rabbit, sits on a snowbank facing away from the camera, mostly looking outwards like he's trying to assess his domain. His fur has changed to winter-white for camouflage, but there are dark streaks and black tips on the ears, and a few other brownish markings on the face, most of which can't be seen here. Only the hare is in focus; the remainder is blurred white snow. One eye is visible on the side of the head. He's keeping an eye on the photographer as a possible threat, as I was only about 8 meters behind him.

The second is facing more across the frame of the image, in a somewhat extended body position, head low and in front of the front paws, as it sniffs something on the ground in front of it. The ears are pointed upward and outward. The front and hind feet are in a "ready" position so it can run quickly if there is a threat. Its eye is clearly visible with full detail. Both are in their white winter coats, with dark markings on the ears and nose.
