But, I have done something that is super cool and I have nobody to share it with, and nothing to show for it besides some passing tests.

HMU if you're a #softwareengineering , #networkengineering , #systemsarchitecture or #designpattern nerd, I'd love feedback and suggestions for improvement (or just question my sanity)

I just posted this controversial post on LinkedIn. Let the blocking begin. (It might happen here, too).

“Hi Bob, I hope that you're well! Do you do migrations? I’m looking for someone who can help me with migrating my <number redacted> employee company from <Cloud Provider Name Redacted> to <Cloud Provider Name Redacted> and help us avoid any gotchas, as we will still be hosting our production site on <Cloud Provider Name Redacted> for the time being. I'm realizing that paying an expert in this case will save time and opportunity. Thanks much!”

“<Name redacted>, thank you so much for thinking of me. In this instance, I’m not the right person for the job. I’d be the one to call if you wanted to migrate out of a commercial cloud service and maintain your operations in your own server room, or on your (owned) equipment in a private data center. You need someone with good knowledge of <Cloud Provider Name Redacted> cloud products. I studiously avoid an architecture that I consider fundamentally flawed.”

If the current chaos in the USA has caused you to realize that it’s important to keep local control of your IT operations, I’m the Network Architect/Engineer who can help you with that.

Setting up a network for a conference is like being a referee at a sports event. If nobody talks about your performance, you have done a good job.
Still, four engineers from NORDUnet made a noteworthy effort as they set up the network for the #TNC24 conference in Rennes, France, early June 2024.

For the first time, the team employed #AI in the solution, optimizing the experience for participants.

Here’s some encouragement for people new to cybersecurity. You’re struggling right now, and that SOC Analyst job doesn’t pay as much as the sales hype led you to believe when you decided to get another cert. Maybe you’re wondering if this is all going to be worth it.

The money is there, but it’s not for beginners. You need to “pay your dues” and get some real-world experience. There really is some stuff that you can’t learn in a classroom.

The redacted Purchase Order shown in the picture is for the cybersecurity gig I posted about on LinkedIn a few days ago. This public utility on the East Coast is an existing customer (since 2010), so I made reservations for hotel, flight, and rental car on the basis of a phone call earlier in the week. The PO arrived Friday. This is for three days on site next week.

One of the more subtle factors in the creation of technical debt is lack of professional growth. For example, a Network Administrator doesn’t continuously learn, has no mentor, and resists new technology and systems out of fear of the unknown. A lack of self-confidence. They stick with what they know, and the network doesn’t advance. In the larger analysis, this isn’t JUST the Net Admin’s fault – it’s also the CIOs fault, for not building growth opportunities into the Net Admin’s career path. The company’s network doesn’t grow and develop because the people in charge don’t grow and develop.

Never stop growing and learning. Don’t wait for others to give you opportunities to learn. Take charge of your personal development.
