I've managed to solder the norns shield sold by Pusherman Productions so that I can start using this old Raspberry Pi 3 for making electronic music. It is running monome's open source firmware and community scripts
Had another chance to do some ambient patching with Silhouette this weekend. Was quite happy where this ended up.
Crow is sequencing Just Friends, W/ (in synth mode), and two Mangroves which are being fed into Silhouette via Sarajewo for mixing and the addition of light and shadow.
#genuary26 prompt: symmetry.
#genuary27 prompt: something interesting with no randomness or noise.
If there's gotta be no randomness, you need to introduce control. I made this cute discontinued device called the #Monome Arc work with #PyScript. This is usually driven by a UDP server, but turns out browsers can't use UDP, so I wrote a WebSocket bridge. Looks like it works
Here's this month's play talk play with Robbie Lyman:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IzefbczYT6c
In this one we talk about negotiating shape and gesture, instrument design, and what it means to perform with computers ethically (or unethically!).
@liaizon @eigenform i was playing 40h with this one yesterday :) https://github.com/monome/monomeSC/releases/download/1.6/flin-230719.scd [i really would love to see more monome+supercollider patches :D] #monome #supercollider there's also https://github.com/antonhornquist/Grrr-sc and f0 did a GreenGrid obj on his green lib...
Here's this month's play talk play with Brian Crabtree (of monome):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0kV2JcJdq1U
In this one we talk where the edges of instrument and system design are and how we relate to the context in which we perform or realize our art.

Here's this month's play talk play with Dan Derks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJng0QdjZiY
In this one we talk about instrument making, acoustic artifacts of digital processes, and how to dispose of a body when someone has died (not really).
Surprised how little #monome posting is on the fediverse. It's one of the oldest and most used #oshw devices there is. Would love to see that community more present here! I had the pleasure of meeting @eigenform at the MNT studio the other day and was reminded what an interesting project that Monome is.
An interesting find! I got my hands on a Raspberry Pi 4S, which is the most powerful module in the CM3 format. It isn't available for retail customers but somehow a store in Denmark had 4 of them in stock
And today it arrived! Broadcom 2711 MCU with the C0 stepping (same as RPi 4B which can run at 1.8GHz) with 32 GB eMMC (Samsung KLMBG2JETD-B041) and 1 GB LPDDR4 (Samsung K4F8E3S4HD-MGCL).
I finally put together all my favorite gear. This is the “mostly Mutable” system I’ve been working with for a while, thanks in part to a wonderful co-worker selling me some modules and to my luck in acquiring Beads and a few other Mutable bits before Émilie shut things down. It’s in a Jake’s Custom Shop 104HP case, which I have to say I can’t wholeheartedly recommend - it’s very sturdy and portable, but many modules will conflict with the rail braces and thus can’t be used at the ends. I actually had to remove one of the rail braces and rely on the structural integrity of the thick Mutable panels to keep everything together.
I had the system on my nearby desk for a while, but that desk is used for a lot of other things, so there was often clutter blocking the system from being used. I also didn’t have a good place for my cables. This side-table was used for my IRIS DPC-44 electronics parts organizer until I realized that it actually had mounting holes which allowed me to attach it to the wall, freeing up the space on the side table. I was also able to position my cable comb so that it’s much easier to access when I’m patching.
My hope is that this will lead to a lower barrier of entry to working on sound design and music-making!
(The photo was taken with my Fujifilm X-T1 and a vintage manual focus 50mm f/1.7 lens.)

Had a fun little jam today with my synths, playing around with polyrhythms and sliding patterns. This is a fairly chilled “ambient techno” piece for wont of a better term. Performed live and recorded in a single take.
The result of yesterday’s messing about with modular synths: a slow, quiet piece with a few voices sequenced from the same chord being repeatedly transformed within a scale.
I made a quick and rough hard-fork of #monome #norns #SuperCollider architecture to allow much easier (for me at least) development of SuperCollider engines for that wonderful little device.

How can soundscapes be used as a way to attend to forest life and the many different ways that we narrate and relate to forests?
The forestscapes project aims to explore and document generative arts-based methods for recomposing collections of sound materials to support “collective inquiry” into forests as living cultural landscapes.
As part of the project we have an open call for folders of forest sounds.

Some weekend squelchy & clicky melodies created by modulating various Mangrove and Three Sisters controls using Ansible’s Kria sequencer. Simple drums from the TR-06. Reverb and delay from Blue Sky, an RE-201, and the XAOC Sarajewo.
