We found a new wasp! Students are discovering insect species through citizen science

Playgrounds can host a variety of natural wonders – and, of course, kids! Now some students are not just learning about insects and spiders at school — they are putting them on the map and even discovering and naming new species.

@aram Sputnik. A generation before me. Blind panic from top to bottom, opening a short window during which the broad society, and relevant institutions, were willing to make sacrifices to commit resources to science education.

Primary result: total failure.

Secondary result: every five or ten years, another comprehensive report appears that details the previous cycle's failures, and makes recommendations that are invariably ignored in the next cycle.

Turning 80-ish (usa letter-sized) pages of reading into Google Slides so students can read more comfortably on their Chromebooks.

I really wish I could just use an HTML page, but last I looked Google Drive won't display HTML files as web pages.

I suppose I could make it 8.5x5.5 landscape PDF, but not sure how well that would work on their screens.

Any thoughts?

(Reading started in #TexLatex, so I can #pandoc it into just about anything.)

NEW EPISODE: Just as someone steering a ship adjusts the rudder based on feedback from the ocean, so too does good pedagogy depend on what our guest today, biology teacher Christian Moore-Anderson, calls “recursive teaching”, or a constant feedback loop of action, interpretation, and learning between teachers and students.

While #Trump suggests the federal govt is doing too much on #education, he also demands that it do more. The #ExecutiveOrder is expected to amplify Trump’s call for #schools to excise *illegal discrimination* in the *guise* of #diversity, #equity & #inclusion programs or risk losing federal #funding, which accounts for about 10% of #K12 public #school dollars & a significant share of higher education funding.

Another Visit To The Denver Metro Regional Science Fair (DMRSEF) As A Judge

Another year as a volunteer judge for the DMRSEF, this time Senior Earth & Environmental - and with the added fun of four (4) special awards to decide (thank you to the sponsors/organisations!)
This is the ninth year for me, mentioned only to indicate how fun & genuinely rewarding it can be, such truly amazing student entries – and also mentioned to encourage you to volunteer to be a judge at one as well, the proverbial #payingitforward
(I always try and wear a nerd shirt, hence the egregious photo of me 😛 - and the sign, well... )

Had a blast talking to young teens at one of the local Boys & Girls Club houses about #science
Took along my microwave as I'm wont to for demos etc. Was meant to be an hour but ending being nearly 2. They really really really wanted me to blow something up 😅 in the microwave but were otherwise still engaged.
Another reason I love doing #K12 #Outreach is that I learn new things. Their persistence and curiosity led me to zap (empty) chips/Cheetos bag. A few quick sparks & shrunk in 8 seconds!

"Across eight decades, the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed and reaffirmed the unconstitutionality of religious indoctrination in public schools. In McCollum v. Board of Education (1948), it ruled that religious instruction in public education buildings during the school day violated the First Amendment’s Establishment Clause. In Engel v. Vitale (1962), the court concluded that public prayer in schools did the same. Later rulings — in Lee v. Weisman (1992) and Santa Fe Independent School District v. Doe (2000) — extended the ban on public prayer beyond the school day to graduations and athletics, respectively... Following Trump’s first-term conservative makeover of the Supreme Court, however, the nation’s highest court has signaled an interest in revisiting these issues. This has emboldened MAGA leaders in various states to start breaching the wall of separation between church and state, particularly at the K-12 level."

Meet the Hired Guns Who Make Sure #School #Cyberattacks Stay Hidden

An investigation into more than 300 cyberattacks against US K–12 schools over the past five years shows how schools can withhold crucial details from students and parents whose data was stolen.
