This Is Not Propaganda

#Book about digital #propaganda & how it affects viewer’s normality

How manipulation of reality characterizing #Russian politics was used in 2016 US #election & #Brexit #vote

Shows destroying idea of objective truth is a goal of internet propaganda, as is destroying trust in #democracy & information overload to persuade people to trust in #dictator

Suggestions to build #journalistic, online actions to focus on facts

The #NewYorkTimes devotion to the horse race is at least consistent, if a waste of #journalistic resources many of us bemoan regularly. Sadly, so is the paper's willingness to be manipulated. Instead of weighing news value and vetting for accuracy and context, the NYT can be counted on to simply regurgitate what candidates say each day in headlines that get a lot more attention than fact-checks after. Better #journalism would keep the daily trail in context and look harder at substance #USPol

#Trump seeks to #delay his #hushmoney #sentencing on 34 Felony Counts until after the #election

His #lawyers say they are seeking to have the #conviction #overturned on #immunity #grounds.

But in reality, in a detail the #journalistic #story left out, Trump wants his #sentencing #delayed until after the #election in hopes he can #pardon himself.

There's no reason for the #NewYorkTimes' CEO to be insightful about #localnews, and he isn't, though this interview is worth reading. But Joshua Benton at Nieman Lab knows this territory well, and I agree with his assessment that if the Times "believes in its “core #journalistic mission... it should be using its position of relative financial security to work harder on the biggest and most intractable part of the problem. And that’s local news." niemanlab.org/2024/02/weve-rea #journalism

Nieman Lab“We’ve really worked hard not to ever have a pivot at The New York Times”: A.G. Sulzberger on AI, local news, and that Trump bump"Never get comfortable; always assume that the world is conspiring to take down the industry and that we will have to move heaven and earth to overcome those forces to blaze a path forward for quality journalism."

Reject the #guise of #journalistic #neutrality when it serves to #legitimize #antitrans #propaganda and #harm #trans people, and deny us our #humanrights. Stand against those who would #vilify #marginalized young people and seek to #fracture #families; the public counts on you to prioritize #truth over #harmful #bias. Exercise #discernment and #empathy in your #coverage, acknowledging #healthcare as a #basic #humanright.

Oh, FFS. Stop this line of BS thinking right now:

“It's becoming clear that more than just a random process is going on under the hood, and what we're witnessing is somewhere on a fuzzy gradient between a lookup database and a reasoning intelligence. “

Super grateful to historian Timothy Snyder for taking a sharp look at that #NYTimes article from Oct 2016 that announced the FBI found "no clear link" between Trump & Russia. In misleading readers the way it did, "it is suggestive of something malignant."

As Snyder says, only looking closely at those events gives us a chance to heal. So he analyzes some faulty #journalistic practices.

@lcrw What bothers me is that the cable “news” outlets are giving these people airtime. Remember the good ‘ol days when the lunatics were shuffled off to the fringes where they could play with their toes and count the conspiracies against them? Now, they’re front-and-center because outlets like #CNN, #Fox, and #MSNBC (among others) are more interested in viewership and agenda than any notion of #journalistic #integrity.

I know I’m not making some big revelation with that statement, but it still saddens me to think of how far we’ve fallen from the days of Edward R. Murrow, Dan Rather, and the like.

What saddens me more is that I don’t see a way back.
