I am thinking about #immutable data backups. No software solutions that malware or ransomware can get around. Something old school with a physical lock on it, think the tab on a casset, or switch on a 2.5' floppy.
Is the only equivelent in the modern day the large format SD (SDXC) card? What other options exist out there for home use?
@Lu with all due respect to #linuxmint #developers the #flagship variant should be based on #debian and for those who use #nvidia #gpus and need the #drivemanager ( #gui to install #proprietary #drivers ), could use the #ubuntu variant. LinuxMint as a #community #distro aligns with Debian and #flatpak #universal #linux #package #format compared with Ubuntu and its #snap package format. Also, Ubuntu as a commercial distro will eventually switch to an #immutable #system with all snap packages.

working on a new custom Arch Linux immutable desktop, built for 2018-2019 intel Macs. Using Arkdep from Arkane Linux for the immutability has been a breeze so far. The constraint of /var and /etc not persisting across reboots (with exceptions, via migration scripts and btrfs subvolumes) makes you get creative. #linux #immutable
Wuuuuuut? #Linux #game #patch? FOR #BAZZITE?!!? THE FUTURE IS #IMMUTABLE.
This is a pretty cool turn of events, because a game studio under a major publisher supporting Linux shows how far we've come.
Bazzite is of course based on #Fedora #Silverblue, which was my daily driver for some years. Neat!

https://youtu.be/zLbl3EDmKBk?si=W_ccrVYvms8tkSuM I was watching this and video and I thought that distro are working with #gnomeos and well I get a little excited because I use #microos for 2 years without any failure and I still like the idea of a #immutable #rolling like #tumbleweed, I do not know what distro base the @AdrianVovk team will be working on, but I have to say that I get a little excited if Gnomeos worked with the microus rolling base. But I am aware has its goals and needs.
So waiting for some news from Gnomees that just remembering makes me illusory.
I think the only reason people (such as myself) get so invested in, and then disillusioned by the reality of immutable operating systems is that what we don't actually care about "not editing system files unless directly applied", is that we just want system files to be backed up and revertable.
We just want a nice and clean seperately partitioned system that keeps backups (automated storage of only diff change, to reduce physical memory size), and so when we decide to adhoc tinker quickly across a dozen modules, sections, files, we can, and we can quick save at any time and start back at the last save, without modifying the user files.

Chat, I'm gonna install immutable Linux on my laptop today, which is recommended?
Wrote a quick article about how #bootc is important and some examples of how powerful it can be. Happy to answer any additional questions!

Its been a long time since I've tried any of the openSUSE variations. This particular one - Aeon - uses an immutable core OS layer in combination with user-installed applications courtesy of flatpak + distrobox.

@danie10 Danie, do you happen to know how to run updates on #KDEOS / #KDELinux? Running Discover only updates the #flatpaks, not the underlying system. Running the standard #ArchLinux sudo pacman -Syu
is inapplicable because the base is #immutable. None of my online searches have found any guidance on this.
@jorge I want to thank you and your team for the work you have done to your "son", I can tell you have given him a lot of love. Seeing your reflections in your last video I share the idea that "normal users", do not install OS and that their approach is towards developers in order to permeate and go to the mainstream public. Even so I appreciate as a user who only wants to occupy your computer to do normal things the effort you have put to get and use, after much searching and attempts to install the NVIDIA proprietary drivers with an environment with "Wayland+secureboot" I succeeded with your distro, I also worked in #ubuntu, but with #Bluefin was from the installation and these things that not many value help normal users, like me. I perfectly understand your vision towards developers but if you have time do not forget the normal users.
Honestamente agradecido.

One of the reasons why I moved to containers (#Flatpak, rootless and rootful containers) and atomic desktop (#Fedora Silverblue), that is, less breakage.
I have used several distros in the past, and I found that by installing several packages from the repos, when I had to do updates, something would break (Steam via dnf for example caused more breakages than anything else, conflicting with Mesa i386 and Mesa x86_64)
I finally said "screw it", and decided to leave the root as intact as possible.
Atomic desktops aren't perfect for some users, but they are the ones I have found to be most stable and cause less breakages.
It would be possible on a common distro to leave the root intact technically, but never experienced.

After nearly 6.5 years since the bug/feature request was filed, it looks like Chromium are going to implement `cache-control: immutable`!
The bug has been assigned to someone at Microsoft so maybe they want it in Edge.
Good news, IMO!

What's everyone's thoughts on immutable linux distros?
Fedora Kinoite and some of the tweaks by Universal Blue look really tempting, but some of the reviews I've seen cite error messages and app compatibility struggles.
