Numskulls, Harlequins & Amusing Misleaders – NHAM Mixtape 10

Released on April Fools’ Day I had to give this one a fitting title. But the tomfoolery stops there. There are no pranks below. Only more great tunes found in The Fediverse.

Last month a brilliant little album of collaborations between artists who connected via Radio Free Fedi was released, including one track featuring yours truly. It was such a top album that I’ve included five of the collaborations within this mix.

The radio show version of this mixtape (where you have to put up with me talking a bit too) can be found on Audio Interface (@audiointerface) from the first Monday of the month.

[If viewing from the Fediverse you need to click here to listen to the mixtape on NHAM]

1. Dancing and Kissing by Bitplanes
CC BY-SA
@bazkie

Kicking off with a most uplifting of tracks for all the dancers, kissers and cuddlers out there.

2. You are not alone by C.Circo and sknob
CC-BY-NC-SA
@CCirco, @sknob

Am I only dreaming? This song is a dream in every sense. I feel like I’ve drifted off under a tree on a lovely sunny day and am dozing in and out of a lovely light dream.

3. origami universe by pulu
CC BY-NC-SA
@ahihi

Originally released on the first disc of last autumn’s 3-disc Not What I Call Bonkwave compilation, origami universe is a triumph in glitching, breaking and euphoric chanting. pulu is Miranda, a ‘computer sound worker’ from Finland.

4. collapse by control.org
CC BY-SA 4.0
@controlfreak

I get real Underworld vibes from this beast of a tune taken from the 2002 album ‘radiate’. Control yourselves!

5. Night Dad by Galaxy Brain
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@galaxybrain

London electronic music producer Galaxy Brain named this song after a Korg M1 patch. It comes from a four track EP of the same name which she describes as a love letter to late 80s and early 90s deep house.

6. The Space Between the Sea and the Sky (Default Media Transmitter remix) by Key13
CC BY-NC-SA
@keefmarshall

In mystic tradition ‘thin places’ are energy fields where it is said that the veil between our world and the eternal world is thin. The space on the horizon where the sky meets land or sea is often cited as one of these places. This track captures that essence magnificently.

7. Nothing Comes Around by Edith Frost
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@edithfrost

A gorgeous folk pop song from a brand new album by the singer-somgwriter from Austin, Texas.

8. Shame by Matt Young & Edvards
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@mattyoung, @EDVARDS

In this relatable tale of regretting youthful misdemeanour, Matt and Edvards combine superbly for a dose of melodic, retro pop-rock.

9. Leave the Light On by Futzle featuring Aelyth from sideSister
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@futzle, @elsemusic, @jimbob

Ethereal vocals, captivating chord changes and a swinging beat that you can’t help but nod, tap and groove to.

10. ZOE by Center of the Universe
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@counivers

RTFM! 😂 Great line. From the album COU which contains eight 3-letter-acronym titled songs, ZOE – presumably about the electric car – heaps the fun in to the funky. The deep vocal and content matter makes this a perfect sequel to Hot Chip’s Playboy (driving in a Peugeot with the top down) for the renewables generation! Although I’m not sure whether Norwegian DJ and artist Center of the Universe sees it that way, citing the album as a collection of obsolete technologies which once had promises of a brighter future.

11. DOINITRITE by Babu Menos
All Rights Reserved. Used with permission
@babumenos

Wow! Nods to Byrne, Gabriel and Bowie in this epic juxtaposition of a funky, happy-sounding groove that depicts an angry, greedy, needy, ruthless and narcissistic world leader who considers himself infallible.

12. That One Day by Default Media Transmitter/Xylander
(Words written by Deborah Pickett, read by Eivind)
CC-BY
@defaultmediatransmitter, @xylander, @eivind

Closing out with the four way collaboration that closed out the Comfy Collaborations album. A mammoth soundscape about the end of everything can really go in no other place. Enjoy it while you can.

I woke this morning with a light heart and tranquil mind. It’s so good to be playing and creating again. #music #musician #MusiciansDay #FediMusic #MastoMusic substack.com/profile/118813522

SubstackSimon Campbell on SubstackI woke this morning with a light heart and tranquil mind. It’s so good to be playing and creating again. Thursdays are great as this when we hold our regular Vibrationists rehearsal—the new live music and multimedia project with @Suzy Starlite, @Dave Boyd and myself. Dave normally arrives at the Supertone Sonic Laboratory around noon and after setting up, we normally kick off playing the trickiest stuff from our ever-expanding set list. It’s very interesting as we are reimagining our existing material for the three-piece format incorporating new instrumentation. Yesterday saw the first appearance of Dave’s BOSS monster looper pedal which really made a great contribution to the soundscape. Starlite is also really pushing the boundaries of her pedalboard and is making some very cool noises. We always have a relaxed lunch which is a great time to discuss in words what we don’t say in the music. Yesterday was Starlite's special salad with Halloumi and my version of tabbouli. As ever I am wrestling with the number of instruments I need to deliver a smooth live performance. Currently, the Springer Firehawk, Fender Nocaster and Gretsch G6120-1960 Nashville electrics will be making an appearance plus the Collings D2H and Fylde custom 6 and 12 strings acoustics. That’s six fucking guitars and I may need more. The big issue I have is during the set I use five-six tunings, ranging from a very interesting Csus right through to standard. Guitars don’t like to be quickly pulled all the way up from C and back down again—especially in this climate which plays havoc with acoustic instruments—so it’s best if you have dedicated guitars for dedicated tunings. It wouldn’t be so bad if we could program the songs that would best suit the tunings, but live sets don’t work that way as the song order is paramount to a successful gig. All I can say, it’s a good job we have the mighty Van Of Rock. ////// We have been gradually adding stuff to our website and now have a good summary of what we are all about - take a look. ////// Warning | guitar porn. The picture below was taken by Michael Springer at his workshop before I took delivery of this great Firehawk. Wonderful instrument.

Testing a piece of equipment that just came back from the repair shop this evening, and came across this gem of an acoustic guitar sound.

Recently, I've been only capturing things in real-time performance, with no editing and very little mixing after the fact. This can either be very challenging, or very easy.

In this case, it was easy. Acoustic guitar only. :) Fun times, weird music.

Space out with me, if you dare.

Chiacchiere a parte, spero vi piaccia 😀

\o/ Yeah, it's totally complicated with me and myself. Writing this from my "international artist account" (the other one is my "German Rants + German Net politics" account).

But hey, what a time to be alive – this is my very first international artist cooperation over the Internet and at that over the
#Fediverse ever (!). And it's funny how it got to that - I think I was a bit rude in my comment about a very first demo the Captain released (but only about a certain aspect, his special gift about super catchy song writing was clearly there already back then). So one thing let to another and finally I found myself singing and also providing a little tiny additional sequence that made it (modified by the captain) event into this final version.
I apologize for my singing style – typically I'm not using that "male voice posing " persona of mine; but I felt it fits well into this wasteland-end-of-all mood that at the same time is contracted by the Captains light disco beats.
Also dat break in the middle!! You need to hear it!

This may even be stuff for the
#gothdiscoinferno created by a certain Bauhausmensch, but I dunno if it qualifies for being good enough just because I sing like a drugged horny goth god.

I seriously appreciate it you all give it a good listen - and not only this song - the whole album by "Life Substitute" that's the Captain's artist name as my artist name is "die nmi!" is wonderful, there even better songs at it than this.
I mean it, this deserves much (!) more attention.

Also because any money that comes in (if any comes in) will be going out to
#povertyAffected people.
On top of it it's
#creativecommons CC-By-SA licensed (not only this track), so feel free to get your copy, even if you can't pay for it.
I hope I find time (May soonest realistically) to make a nice remix of it, that will be... different, darker even (if that's ok with the Captain ;) - didn't ask him so far ;) ).

By the way, there will be more cooperations with Fediverse artists and me in the future, and if the ones read this, they may wonder: Why I'm not reporting back? RL is still very difficult for me (typing right now in the train, going to my health issue plagued parents) - I will make it in April, that's a promise... This one was sung by me back in September I think, when all was fine in my RL. The Captain did almost countless iterations of this track until we both felt (I mean it's his track, I'm just some minor advisor... and well... singer) good about it.

And is it
#bonkwave you may ask? Is it? No, totally not. We are totally against it. Aren't we? Or is it? What do I know?
