Today is Monday, 1st September. And September means one thing: EuroBSDCon!
23 days to go until EuroBSDCon 2025 in Zagreb!
I’m doing a little “advent calendar” for BSD fans: each day until the conference I’ll share one article from it-notes.dragas.net about FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, DragonFlyBSD, ZFS, PF and more. The dedicated hashtag will be #EuroBSDConAdvent
Let’s start right away with "I Solve Problems" - my EuroBSDCon 2024 (and #BSDCan 2025) talk about migrating from Linux to BSDs:
https://it-notes.dragas.net/2024/10/03/i-solve-problems-eurobsdcon/
If you’re coming to Zagreb, reply to this post - it would be nice to meet up with fellow BSD users!
I know that there are so many #OpenBSD developers and ideas that would need funding, but I would absolutely love to contribute financially (as little as my contributions would be) to efforts to get HAMMER2 or ZFS working on it.
It seems there are already efforts to port HAMMER2FS over from #DragonflyBSD [1] , and I so wish it would be possible to accelerate it.
I was thinking about the https://dmesgd.nycbug.org/dmesgd?do=index&fts=cybersec website.
Do you guys believe that it is ok, to post your dmesg ? Or... doing it might raise security concerns ?
Thanks in advance, Yours Truly
News/Changes:
BoxyBSD will bring in a feature for more advanced users for our free boxes. Instead of only selecting a set of pre-defined BSD based images, you'll soon also be able to create your install simply from scratch with full remote access to your box. This lets you perform custom installations of #FreeBSD, #NetBSD, #OpenBSD, #DragonflyBSD, #MidnightBSD but also of some other niche systems like #illumos
Unfortunately, this might still take some time and fully relies on the spare time of @gyptazy.
@mjg @nixCraft @linuxfoundation
/etc is also specified in the SVID, volume 1, in the filesys(BA_ENV) section, and is in hier(7) across operating systems from #DragonFlyBSD to #NetBSD.
Let's not swing too far in the other direction just to counter the LInux-freedesktop-centric /etc/os-release myopia. (-:
Two #blog posts in less than one week!
It was considered known that there is no support within GNAT (Ada) for illumos. We cross-build a complete native binutils+gcc toolchain for illumos to test out this claim.
...only to discover that illumos has full support within GNAT. Not a single test fails.
A new #blog post appears!
I discovered that the GNU D compiler has been broken on FreeBSD 14 for over a year and it seems no one noticed. Let's discover the issue and brainstorm some solutions to it.
A great case study for why operating system package maintainers matter.
Ok so, please explain it like I’m five, #BSD folx.
Let’s say I wanted to leave ipv4 behind in my homelab, both internal network services and services exposed to the wider internet. Could I decide “I’m an ipv6 guy” and just not mess with ipv4 and NAT etc?
For context, I am a generalist that occasionally cosplays as a sysadmin and don’t really understand either standards in a complete way.
Some friendships just don't crash. Happy Friendship Day from your most stable and reliable OS.
#RunBSD #FriendshipDay #SysAdmin #FreeBSD #OpenBSD #NetBSD #GhostBSD #DragonflyBSD #MidnightBSD #HardenedBSD & other BSDs i might have missed :)
Hello Fedi - what is your most used *BSD service that is builtin to the OS?
From Jails to Pledge, name your favorite!
#RUNBSD! But BoxyBSD now also starts to support #Linux! We're starting soon with the Linux support for already present users, offering free boxes:
* #AlmaLinux
* #Alpine
* #Debian
* #Devuan
* #CentOS
* #Fedora
* #Gentoo
* #OpenSuse
* #OpenEuler
* #RockyLinux
Just next to our core OS like #FreeBSD, #OpenBSD, #NetBSD, #MidnightBSD and #DragonflyBSD (and #illumos). This should also make the step easier to compare and test different scenarios where BSD provides a different behavior compared to Linux systems.
Thanks to @gyptazy for the implementation!
I'm not thrilled about switching to a different OS after decades with #DragonFlyBSD. And those drives are still in the computer—I just added new HDDs.
I have no complaints about HAMMER2 — it's fast, reliable, doesn't require as much memory as zfs, doesn't take half a day to warm up its cache after being turned on in the morning, and deduplication doesn't require a huge amount of memory either.
Glad I run BSD here (I am BSD agnostic, they are all grand IMO) after seeing this post.
On this day in 2003, Matthew Dillon sent out an email making an announcement that would go on to become a landmark in the history of the BSD family. The title read:
"Announcing DragonFly BSD!"
Happy 22nd birthday #DragonFly #BSD!
To many more year of challenging goals and ideals, cutting ties with legacy when it makes sense, preferring a pragmatic, no-nonsense approach to the development of the system and the innovative spirit !
