Frances McDoorbell, the postwoman, has pointed out issues with our doorbell.

Seems somehow being mounted in a metal house on a metal post was blocking its feeble radio signal!

Opened it up and wired it to an external antenna that now sticks up from the metal post.

Bonus: It looks like a remote trigger for a bomb (no pic, its dark and snowy).

A HAM enthusiast should chime in momentarily, telling me all the antenna design crimes this constitutes.

Also got a doorbell. Made a little housing for it with a piece from the zinc scrap pile.

The wireless doorbell is pretty clever: Instead of using a battery and finding out it's empty because you missed a delivery, it has no battery at all. Instead, it generates enough power to squirt a radio message to the receiver from the force of the finger pushing the button to ring the bell. Clever.

I was intrigued by this door bell on Loudon Terrace in the West End of Glasgow which seems to have been altered many times over the years. A bit of digging revealed it's been there for 125 years, and bears the name of George W. Sellars, a painter and decorator who lived at this address in 1899. He had two offices, one round the corner at 355 Byres Road (now occupied by a Waterstones bookshop) and another on West George Street.
