The GitHub Copilot Chat client for VS Code is now open source under the MIT license. Here's the source code:

"As Copilot Chat releases in lockstep with VS Code due to its deep UI integration, every new version of Copilot Chat is only compatible with the latest and newest release of VS Code. This means that if you are using an older version of VS Code, you will not be able to use the latest Copilot Chat.

Only the latest Copilot Chat versions will use the latest models provided by the Copilot service, as even minor model upgrades require prompt changes and fixes in the extension. An older version of Copilot Chat will still use the latest version of Copilot completions."

PSA: If you find that Visual Studio Code version 1.100.3-1 or similar hangs after a few seconds after launch on Electron 34 and you have the GitLens extension installed, disable it with "code --disable-extension eamodio.gitlens" and it should work again. I was using it because it added more git repo UI to VS Code, but I guess it doesn't work anymore. For reference, I'm using the Arch Linux "code" package from the "extra" repo.

The author of the "Material Theme" and "Material Icon Theme" for Visual Studio Code, has just pulled the dirtiest move I've ever seen from an extension developer.

With the latest "update" they pulled all previous versions, changed the name & licence, blocked all feedback/comments and made the theme "paid".

It's since been reviewed-bombed from nearly 5, to barely 1.5 stars, but after it been FOSS for nearly a decade I'm unsure what else they expected.

So, a few days of trying out #Zed instead of #VisualStudioCode:

  • God it's fast, but I guess that's to be expected when you have a native rust build.
  • Not as many extensions, but many things I used to need an extension for are just... built in.
  • AI stuff fully disappears when turned off.
  • Rust support is very good.
  • Haven't written go with it yet, so cant' say how it works there.
  • Inline error display is nice.
  • Can't use it to debug my code (yet) which is a feature I loved in VSCode.

So far... quite a nice experience, and when they add debugging support, it'll be fully an upgrade for me.

As I got sick of #VisualStudioCode, I am now trying out #Zed, and after an hour of use, I don't have a strong opinion yet, except:

  • God is it responsive, it's nice to have an editor that's written in a compiled language instead of a browser pretending to be an editor.
  • It had a flag to turn off all the AI nonsense, the "sparkle" icon is gone now, and I'm happier for it.
