C.<p>We're a week into April here on the Canadian prairies [1], but it's a little different than other places. Spring isn't here, it's on the horizon. Everything's still got a blanket of snow on it, and we could easily get more [2]. There's no blooms or buds to tell you spring is on the way.</p><p>There are really only two big clues that Old Man Winter is thinking about leaving:</p><p>1. Days are noticeably longer than just a few weeks ago.</p><p>2. The jackrabbits!</p><p>They're turning brown again, losing their winter-white coat. Unfortunately it's kind of ruining their camouflage.</p><p>I find it interesting that the degree or progression of the change is so different between different individuals. I'm told the change is triggered by the lengthening days, so it's some sort of built-in variance.</p><p>These are white-tailed jackrabbits, which are actually a species of hare, not rabbit. They're the most common hare on the Canadian prairies, shown here in my backyard.</p><p>[1] It's probably a week into April where you are, too. Funny how that works.</p><p>[2] In the time I've lived in Saskatchewan, I have seen snow fall in every month of the calendar except July.</p><p><a href="https://mindly.social/tags/hare" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hare</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/rabbit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>rabbit</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/jackrabbit" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>jackrabbit</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/wildlife" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>wildlife</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/bunny" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>bunny</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/SK" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>SK</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Saskatchewan" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Saskatchewan</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/prairie" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>prairie</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/Canada" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>Canada</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/RabbitsOfMastodon" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>RabbitsOfMastodon</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/diurnal" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>diurnal</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/daylight" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>daylight</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/season" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>season</span></a> <a href="https://mindly.social/tags/spring" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>spring</span></a></p>
