Two trans-identified men who play on female soccer teams in Australia have taken a women's rights campaigner to court after she referred to them as "men."

"An Australian women’s rights campaigner who has been raising awareness over the participation of trans-identified male athletes in women’s football leagues is facing accusations of “misgendering.” Kirralie Smith, who opposes men in women’s sports, has been handed two Apprehended Violence Orders (AVO) — a legal measure similar to a restraining order — on behalf of two trans-identified male players, and has appeared in court for the ninth time in order to defend herself for referring to them as men.

Smith is a spokeswoman with Binary Australia, a campaign group dedicated to advocating for single-sex sports in Australia. Smith has argued against the inclusion of male athletes in women’s sports as a result of gender identity policies. In 2024, she launched a letter-writing campaign encouraging concerned individuals to contact Football New South Wales after it was reported that a trans-identified male on a women’s football team had caused injuries to multiple female players.

The male player, Riley Dennis, lodged an AVO against Smith, and is one of five trans-identified male athletes participating on the “inclusive” Premier League women’s team, The Flying Bats Football Club. The Flying Bats, a football club for “self-identified women and non-binary people,” has drawn significant criticism, leading to increased security and prohibitions against filming at matches. During the 2024 season of the North West Sydney Football Women’s Premier Competition, The Flying Bats won all 17 games and scored 76 goals while only a total of 8 points were scored against them.

During court proceedings on Monday, Smith was asked if she would refer to Dennis with feminine pronouns, according to women’s rights activist Sall Grover, who attended the hearing. When Smith responded that she would not refer to Dennis as a woman, she was asked if she felt that her position was “mean,” to which Smith replied that she was making a fact-based statement in calling Dennis a man.

Dennis, for his part, claimed that he believed that Smith had “outed” him as being male. However, Dennis has been known as a trans activist for nearly a decade, as noted by Grover, and had additionally declared to The Flying Bats team that he identified as transgender.

Last year, Reduxx learned that Dennis had injured female athletes on opposing teams on more than one occasion. Before transferring to The Flying Bats FC, Dennis was previously accused of severely injuring women while participating in matches for the New South Wales Inter Lions.

On May 21, 2023, during a game between the Inter Lions and the St. George football clubs at the Majors Bay Reserve, Dennis launched his smaller female opponent towards a metal fence using an aggressive tackle as the two chased down the ball.

Reduxx was provided footage of the match, which showed the female player laying on her side, unmoving, as the transgender player casually walked away.

The month prior, Dennis was said to have injured another female player, who reportedly had to seek hospital attention as a result of her injury.

An anonymous source close to the situation explained to Reduxx that Dennis left the Inter Lions team following the controversy over the injured female players. The source stated that Dennis then submitted at least three applications of interest for other teams, which were not accepted. The Flying Bats, however, approved his application to join the team. The football club’s official website states it is “the biggest LGBTQIA+ women’s and non-binary football club in the world”, having been founded in 1985.

A letter-writing campaign was launched by Smith, out of concern for the safety of the female players, encouraging concerned individuals to contact Football New South Wales — which reportedly then received over 12,000 submissions.

For her role in bringing awareness to the injuries sustained by female athletes, Smith was visited by New South Wales Police and handed an Apprehended Violence Order (AVO) on March 30 that year requiring that she neither discuss nor approach Dennis. Smith also experienced the censorship of her social media accounts."

Transgender women banned from female pool category

"Transgender women have been banned from the female category of Ultimate Pool Group (UPG) after last week's landmark UK Supreme Court ruling that the legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex.

The professional body for 8-ball pool said it has amended its eligibility rules so that participation in its women's events "are open only to biologically born women".

The decision comes after protests were held at the final of the Ultimate Pool Women's Pro Series Event earlier this month, which was competed between Harriet Haynes and Lucy Smith - two transgender women.

UPG said "recent developments have now made the position clear", and that it "welcomes the clarity" brought by the Supreme Court judgment.

It also said that a report it commissioned had concluded that 8-ball pool "was a gender affected sport and that in cue sports female players have unique disadvantages compared to male players and that transgender women retain male advantages".

The body said that an open category "will continue to be open to all regardless of sex".

"We respect that some people within the pool community may find the changes challenging" it added.

"As an organisation, we are committed to being empathetic to all members of our community and we expect all members of our community to reflect this."

Ultimate Pool Women's Pro Series Event 2 at Robin Park Leisure Centre in Wigan was contested by two biological males.

That match between Haynes and Smith witnessed protests amid what had also been legal proceedings brought by female-born players over UPG's transgender policy.

'Ruling brings clarity'
In an update to its terms and conditions, UPG said that it "has been caught in a vacuum of uncertainty surrounding the issue of eligibility to participate in its women's series".

Last year, Lynne Pinches, one of Britain's top female pool players said she turned down a first ever professional contract because she believes transgender women have an unfair competitive advantage.

In August 2023, governing body the World Eightball Pool Federation (WEPF) and its promoters UPG, said transgender players would not be able to play against "naturally-born women" but that decision was then reversed.

Pinches then staged a protest by conceding the Women's Champion of Champions tournament to transgender opponent Haynes in Prestatyn.

Haynes argued transgender players have competed in female categories for 20 years, and that there was no categoric evidence they have an advantage in cue sports.

She has taken legal action against the English Blackball Pool Federation (EBPF), which has also banned transgender women competing in female categories.

Pinches said she was part of a group of players launching their own legal action against the WEPF and UPG over rules forcing them to play transgender women.

In a statement, the Women in Pool group, which includes Pinches, said: "This is the result of 15 months of legal action which we have been pursuing against Ultimate Pool and against the World Eightball Pool Federation.

"At our instruction, our lawyers informed the two pool bodies' lawyers that we would be prepared to forego litigation if experts could be jointly instructed to determine whether or not the sport of pool was "a gender-affected" activity as defined in the Equality Act 2010.

"We are pleased that this strategy has succeeded, and that Ultimate Pool has now changed its rules as we had sought."

UPG has now become the first sports body to amend its rules in the wake of last week's judgment by the Supreme Court.

"The Equality and Human Rights Commission chairwoman Baroness Kishwer Falkner has confirmed that the ruling has brought clarity and that trans women cannot take part in women's sport and that the EHRC would pursue organisations which do not update their policies" it said.

"UPG welcomes the clarity which this judgment brings."

It said the ruling - along with the findings of the "detailed and comprehensive experts report" it commissioned - meant "it is necessary for UPG to amend its eligibility policy for participation in the women's series and international events".

It added: "With effect from 23 April 2025 trans women will not be eligible to participate in the women's series nor will trans women be eligible to be selected for international events in the female category."
