I'm going to put this here (it's also in a reply) in case people don't know.
In Australia, the parties are paid by the AEC, to reimburse some of their campaign spending, if they reach 4% of the primary (first preference) vote.
So if you like your local independents or socialists or small parties or greens, give them your *first* preference.
It means your vote can be useful to changing the political landscape, even if it ultimately ends up with a major party because you live in a safe seat or similar.
It's also a *really* good reason not to donkey vote. Vote they way you want, or don't vote. Donkey voting (numbering down from the top without thinking) sends money to whoever is at the top of the ballot.
