More than 1,900 members of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine signed an open letter -- warning Americans about the “danger” of the Trump administration’s 💥attacks on science.

The letter comes amid the administration’s relentless assault on US scientific institutions
which has included #threats to private universities,
federal grant #cancelations and ideological funding reviews, mass government #layoffs, resignations and #censorship.

“We see real danger in this moment,” the letter states.
“We hold diverse political beliefs, but we are united as researchers in wanting to protect independent scientific inquiry.
We are sending this SOS to sound a clear warning: the nation’s scientific enterprise is being decimated.”

Forgot to mention at least one important caveat.

To some analysts current data doesn't suggest an inflationary pressure as a result of the #Trump #tariffs but, given the sorry state of the #US #economy right now, rather a #MarginSqueeze with (more) #layoffs & mass #bankruptcy as a result.

That of course would not be helpful at all, meaning a jump from the frying pan into the fire.

Others even foresee a #stagflation, combining the worst of two worlds.

Anyway, change will come. 🌎

#TaxTheRich, it’s a decent start

Posted by Bluebird | Mar 12, 2025

"As incredible as it may seem, just a handful of #billionaire #Mainers could fund the state for years out of their own pockets and still live out their lives as multimillionaires. So when socialists say tax the rich, we mean more than raising what billionaires pay by 1% or 2%, we mean raising their taxes by 25% or 50% or more to start with. We mean we should take back the wealth they have collected by exploiting all the people who have worked for them, all the land they have stolen, and all the resources they have grabbed all around the world. In the meantime, socialists often support smaller measures whenever we feel like they are a way to raise funds to help our class, raise consciousness, and build organization.

However, increasing taxes on the wealthy isn’t a permanent solution to the persisting problems of #capitalist society. It’s a good start, but it’s not enough.

[...]

"By all means tax [the wealthy] at a rate of 95%, 99%, 100%, 200%! Take back everything they have stolen from us. Truly solving the causes of social inequality cannot happen until the property of the capitalist class has been expropriated, but for the reasons explained above, simply taxing them at any rate will prove ineffective given enough time.

"Moreover, tax increases tend to antagonize capitalists. Sooner or later, as we are seeing very clearly now in Washington, they will transform their economic might into raw political power to claw back even the small social costs that generations of #SocialMovements and trade unions have imposed on them. During such times, as grim as our prospects may seem, it becomes clearer than ever that so long as the capitalists have all the power, even the most progressive public policy can only be temporary.

"How much longer will capitalist industry be allowed to #pollute the planet? How many more times does the economy have to crash? How many more wars will we be forced to fight on the behalf of these #RobberBarons? How many more lives will be ruined by #debts, mass #layoffs, denied insurance claims, and more? Why should we tolerate a system that exploits those whose labor keeps society functioning?"

'Gov. Tony Evers is trying to recruit displaced federal workers to Wisconsin following waves of mass layoffs by the Trump Administration.

The state Department of Workforce Development launched an online portal this week with resources for people seeking career opportunities in Wisconsin. The agency is also hosting a series of virtual job fairs in April.'

One thing I cannot stress enough for people doing #interviews right now: please have wired everything. I understand money is tight, I’m not advising running out and spending a ton of money.

You want the video call to look and sound the best you can possibly make it sound. This doesn’t have to involve buying new gear. Make sure audio isn’t bouncing off of a window or hard surface. Try to take the call in a room with a lot of soft stuff in it like carpet, soft furniture. Headphones or a good mic is great if you have it.

If you have a Mac and an iPhone, it’s a great webcam. You’ll look way better. If you can get on Ethernet to the router, great decision. Otherwise clean the lens.

Calling in from your phone from mobile internet has very inconsistent results. Just be aware.

⚠️ Developer sabotaged ex-employer IT systems with kill switch
—The Register

「 A subsequent investigation found that on the day he had to hand back his corporate laptop, he had deleted a chunk of encrypted data, and had attempted to wipe its Linux OS directories and two code projects. A review of his search history also showed requests for advice on escalating privileges, deleting data and folders, and hiding processes 」

"With the Trump administration’s rapid downsizing of the federal bureaucracy, subreddits where government workers previously posted the occasional tale about a Zoom meeting mishap or health plan question have become crowded forums for fears, anxieties and tidbits of intra-agency observation."
