Chris Messina<p>Hashtags are a tool for ad hoc group formation and free affiliation that defies gatekeepers.</p><p>No wonder Musk hates them. </p><p>It&#39;s why <a href="https://mastodon.xyz/tags/IDemandHashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="tag">#<span>IDemandHashtags</span></a> and you should too.</p>
Doctor M. Popular<p><span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://threads.net/@docpop/" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>docpop@threads.net</span></a></span> the way Threads handles hashtags is so annoying and it breaks the hashtag's functionality when reading it on Mastodon. <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/IDemandHashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IDemandHashtags</span></a></p>
Doctor M. Popular<p>In this episode of Press This, I asked <span class="h-card" translate="no"><a href="https://mastodon.xyz/@chrismessina" class="u-url mention" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">@<span>chrismessina</span></a></span> if Google Search is becoming less useful for most small websites, and how the <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/fediverse" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>fediverse</span></a> could fix that. We also talk about Chris's early history with <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/WordPress" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>WordPress</span></a>, open web standards, and why hashtags still play an important role for the health of the decentralized web. </p><p>You can listen to our conversation, or read the full transcript here: <a href="https://torquemag.io/2024/02/press-this-hashtag-creator-future-of-wordpress-open-web/" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" translate="no" target="_blank"><span class="invisible">https://</span><span class="ellipsis">torquemag.io/2024/02/press-thi</span><span class="invisible">s-hashtag-creator-future-of-wordpress-open-web/</span></a> <a href="https://mastodon.social/tags/IDemandHashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IDemandHashtags</span></a></p>
Joe McLaughlin<p>Over on Threads, Zuck is proposing it use tags, rather than <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/hashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>hashtags</span></a>. This is dumb. Hashtags is a better, simpler and tested solution for creating community around content and being able to join conversations. Besides the fact that hashtags worked well on Twitter, hashtags are also implemented by Mastodon instances running the ActivityPub protocol. Why create confusion over the (hopefully coming soon) interoperability of Threads and <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/ActivityPub" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>ActivityPub</span></a> etc. <a href="https://mastodon.cloud/tags/IDemandHashtags" class="mention hashtag" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">#<span>IDemandHashtags</span></a></p>
