Australia is in an extinction crisis – why isn’t it an issue at this election?

"Over the past decade, more than 550 Australian species have been either newly recognised as at risk of extinction or moved a step closer to being erased from the planet."

"Analysis shows 1,964,200 hectares of koala habitat was cleared between 2012 and 2021 – 81% of that in Queensland."

"Australia tops global rankings for mammal extinction – at least 33 species have died out since European invasion and colonisation – and is number two behind Indonesia for loss of biodiversity. The challenge is not only to stop the loss of habitat but to restore the environment in places it has been lost in 250 years of European-driven clearing."

Is Claudia Sheinbaum the leader of the free world?

"Around the globe, liberal humanism is faltering while the forces of reactionary cruelty are on the march. So Sheinbaum, who has adopted López Obrador’s slogan “For the good of all, first the poor,” can seem like a shining exception to the reigning spirit of autocratic machismo."

Understanding the health impacts of the climate crisis
and imagining a positive future

"Climate change is the greatest threat to human health now."

"Climate change is already causing significant shifts in weather patterns and an increase in extreme weather events around the world, including droughts, heatwaves, wildfires, storms and floods."

"The major cause of pollution is the burning of fossil fuels, further motivating action on reducing GHG; adverse weather events, such as heatwaves, can acutely amplify pollution impacts."

Australia's extinction crisis
Vote to stop land clearing and habitat destruction

"Successive federal governments have failed to protect nature. Australia now has more than 2,000 threatened species and “ecological communities” – groups of native species that live together and interact. This threatened list is growing at an alarming rate. "

"The Albanese government came to power in 2022 promising to reform the nation’s nature laws, following a scathing review of the laws. But it has failed to do so."

"Only about 1.5% of the hundreds of thousands of hectares of land cleared in Australia every year is fully assessed under the EPBC Act. This means our threatened species and ecological communities are suffering a “death by a thousand cuts”. "

"Stronger environmental law and enforcement is essential for tackling biodiveristy decline and extinction. This should include what’s known as a “climate trigger”, which means any proposal likely to produce a significant amount of greenhouse gases would have to be assessed under the EPBC Act. "

"Key threats to species, including habitat destruction, invasive species, climate change, and pollution, must be prevented or reduced. Aligning government policies and priorities to ensure environmental goals aren’t undermined by economic and development interests is essential."

Inclusive decision-making is crucial for organisations that share ownership - but how do we organise collectively? (1/5)🧵

In cooperatives and other collectively managed enterprises, members put to question the traditional hierarchical governance structures that most of us are used to – with bosses or managers taking the lead and making final decisions.

Cooperatives highlight the need for equal decision-making! They present an alternative to the currently dominating traditional hegemonic economic practices that prioritise central control.

Leaving the care of the vulnerable young and old up to the profit motive

"That process of "marketisation" — where the profit motive is used to regulate relationships between citizens and the state, and citizens and providers of social services, by transforming social relationships into market goods and services — has been applied to everything from education to health, housing, child care, aged care, and employment services... The federal government continues to support for-profit providers through huge childcare subsidies."

"The current system needs fundamental change".
