So far so good. Created a new #Debian server a few days ago. Got the basic config done. So far I've moved my #11ty blog and #Forgejo instance over. I still need to move #Nextcloud, #Miniflux, and #GoatCounter before I can blow away the old #Ubuntu server.

I was considering going with a #FreeBSD server but I need to spend more time with FreeBSD before I'm comfortable with it.

Thought about #Arch too, but decided to keep it simple without overwriting the deployed OS.

I added #GoatCounter to my #astro powered website following their documentation, but now I'm getting this console error:

Content-Security-Policy: The page’s settings blocked a script (script-src-elem) at stevefrenzel.dev/_astro/hoiste from being executed because it violates the following directive: “script-src gc.zgo.at

Tracking is working though but I'm no pro when it comes to this, so any help appreciated! 🙏

new blog post: "GoatCounter, Rogue Scholar and more new things" chem-bla-ics.linkedchemistry.i

"About a year ago I started migrating my blogger.com blog to a git-version-controlled, Markdown-based blogging platform. I have to say, it has been a happy year. It actually is awesome to port old blog posts (follow that here) and to see what I have been working on some 17, 18 years ago. [...]"

@rogue_scholar #goatcounter

Cool. Got #GoatCounter installed and operational. Now I should be able to dump Google Analytics for Elles business site. And I think I'll use it for my blog site too. Mostly just curious to see if it actually gets hit by many bots or not. Still haven't gotten the nginx user agent blocks to work correctly yet.

Fellow #IndieWeb community and anyone that just basically wants an old fashioned page hit counter on their site without relying on #GA4.

Trying out #GoatCounter this evening and it does what I want. It’s #GDPR compliant, too. Nothing fancy, but I don’t need anything fancy. It’s free to use, if you don’t go too crazy with it. And you can alway self host.

@aral Please find me a technology big tech is involved with that we are not funding actual alternatives to. Any form of proprietary lock-in is something we target to remove, anything that invades privacy needs to be stopped/mitigated (think , , .dev, , , , , , etc). That is our contribution. Obviously, the trillion dollar surveillance economy needs to be curbed by harsh regulation, but this is not within our remit...

@aaravchen hmm...so the main heavily used service is Mattermost, which is used mainly for texting (not much media).

Then there's also a currently low-traffic (5-10 visitors/day) #Ghost website with lots of images and #GoatCounter to track the stats.

Now that you mention it, a disk I/O issue is likely: I've had a few of those in the past, sometimes so bad tthey caused MySQL to crash.

FYI: I settled on a self-hosted www.goatcounter.com, but without any JavaScript. Instead I feed my nginx access_log into it.
The access_log is then deleted immediately, and #goatcounter hashes IPs and throws the salt away every 8 hours.
