#FrameworkLaptop

Me on Wednesday, seeing a firmware update for my #FrameworkLaptop available in LVFS: "Sweet, maybe they sharpened up their BIOS software engineering!" *Applies update*

Me, today, after my laptop quietly stopped charging entirely and has now discharged the battery to zero and won't charge or power on. "Well, fuck."

Me, after discovering that Framework have since pulled that BIOS update from distribution due to *different* critical bugs. 🤯🔥🤯

I think it might be new laptop time, regardless of whether my Framework ever boots again. 😞

Lilbits: Framework Laptop 12, Dasung Paperlike 13K, and Snapdragon 8s Gen 3

Frameworks is expanding its modular, repairable laptop lineup this year with the introduction of the first Framework Laptop 12. It’s the company’s first laptop with a touchscreen display and 360-degree hinge, the first with a 12.2 inch screen, and the first that’s positioned as more of a budget device than a premium system: it’s expected to come with a choice of a 12th-gen Intel Core i3 […]

okay, so my official verdict is I'm not recommending #FrameworkLaptop at this point in time.

it's cool, it's got fun features and stuff, but it's also the most unreliable piece of tech I've ever owned, and I've owned multiple sets of cheap bluetooth headphones.

in less than a year of me owning it, it had:

  • ports randomly failing until reboot
  • CPU frequency randomly dropping to 1Ghz until reboot
  • liquid metal leaking and causing boot failures
  • keyboard keys getting stuck and/or out of place
  • random non-persistent boot failures where it just sits with a black screen for a couple of minutes
  • whatever the fuck is happening right now where it corrupted my FS and fails to boot even from a live USB

I do want to believe (although I find it hard, with how they didn't even got around to replacing the faulty liquid-metal-thing in laptops they already sold) that @frameworkcomputer will focus on reliability and longevity instead of chasing the AI hype or whatever, but right now I very much can't recommend this.

Since I am in Rome for a couple of days, I decided to come to work at the Library of the Senate of the Italian Republic this fine morning.

The library staff is not friendly at all, but the place is crazy.

I was asked what kind of laptop this is, and of course I proudly replied: “it’s a @frameworkcomputer, you should get one 😜

I've just installed 96GB of RAM into my #FrameworkLaptop 13 and I must say that this computer has exceeded my expectations. The memory was about $200 (USD) and it arrived from a local, third party reseller in one day.

I will not run AI models, so the 5600M memory is sufficient for me. The fact that this was an upgrade from 8GB is what counts.

Here comes all the VM memory I ever needed :)

Honest review for those considering buying a used #Framework laptop:

I don't recommend the original with the Intel 11th gen processor. There's been a battery drain problem, which seems possibly related to their swappable ports design. This lead to lower battery-life on a daily basis and a battery that eventually died what I would consider prematurely.

Now I have a daily problem with the USB ports dying until I reboot. Looks like I may need a new motherboard after 3.5 yrs.

@eri even for a #Laptop or #Tablet I consider the #FrameworkDesktop a total "#WontBuy!" on my end, as it has less #Upgradeability and #Repiarability than a #Lenovo #X230Tablet or #Fairphone #FP3plus, mich less anything I consider "#Desktop" hardware.

  • Seriously, @frameworkcomputer could've chosen so much better options or just done some sort of Mounting, adaptors & I/O shield to mount a #FrameworkLaptop mainboard and expand it's I/O to be on-par with a #MacMini and people would've happily accepted that.

It's really sad when #DIYperks put in more effort than an entire company at designing a Desktop!

Alright, so. Recently, about once a day, my #FrameworkLaptop 16 has been doing ... this.

This results in the loss of all USB.

Which includes the internal keyboard, any external keyboards, any bluetooth keyboards... basically, everything except the trackpad, which is HID-over-I2C, and the power button, which is wired to the cros EC. I wind up having to hard-power-cycle the machine.

I'm resisting the urge to throw this annoyingly bendy laptop out a window. Anybody got any ideas for how to debug this? @frameworkcomputer ?

New webcam module installed in my #FrameworkLaptop 16 and definitely looks like potato-y, even under the usual cruddy lighting.

Getting the bezel off probably took longer than it probably should have and I really, really, really dislike dealing with flat flex cables.

I swapped out my International English Linux keyboard for my #FrameworkLaptop 16 with the RGB US English version so that I could have something other than a white backlight. I swapped out the Super and Alt Gr keycaps from the former to the latter, because fsck the Windows logo.

Unfortunately, the keycap legends for the RGB keyboard are both horizontally and vertically centered while the non-RGB keycaps are left-aligned. The inconsistent alignment will probably annoy me over time 🤷🏻
