Our highlights tour of Punta Arenas, Chile, included a visit to the cemetery, rated as one of the ten most beautiful in the world by CNN only a few years before our visit in 2016. The area of land was donated by Sara Braun, a leading businesswoman in the region in the late 19th and early 20th century, and her body along with those of many rich families are located in the cemetery.

It's a sunny day with patchy, thin sheets of cloud in the sky. We're in a grand public cemetery comprising avenues of gravel between beautiful mausoleums of stone and marble. Directly in front of us there is one in black stone blocks, reminiscent of ancient Greek or Roman buildings, with a shallow, sloped roof and a portico with four fluted columns in front of the door. Nearer to us on the right there is one in white blocks with a round window set high up and a small railed-off forecourt around it with a few pretty bushes. More mausoleums of varying designs are to the left across a small section of lawn and topiary, each one no more than a few metres tall.

Ushuaia was the last Argentinian port on our 2016 cruise aboard Star Princess and the next day we arrived in the first Chilean stop, Punta Arenas. As is typical for us whenever we're somewhere new we headed off for an excursion first to see some highlights and get some local information from the guide. Our first stop was at the Museo Del Recuerdo (the Remembrance Museum), an open air museum in which were gathered vintage equipment (wagons, movie-making, farming, cars, etc.) and old buildings from the city and region that had been relocated to this spot.

A lightly overcast day and we're standing in a large field with signs of settlement in the distance behind a tree line. The grass nearby is cut short and is a dry green but a little further back the grass grows wilder, taller, and is more pale golden in colour. Immediately in front of us is an old building, a small lighthouse, and an anchor. The house is built with horizontal wooden planking, is painted a pale red, and has a long porch along the front which also has a large windowed area of a grid of square panes of glass, sixteen long and three high. It's an old garage building, though lacking any signage. The small lighthouse to the right and slightly closer to us is not quite as tall as the building but is a wide cylinder of white with a thin red band around it, a small ring of windows tapering outwards and formed of trapezoidal panes alternating in direction up and down around the circumference, topped off with a red conical roof. A large, rusted anchor completes the scene with one arm embedded in the ground. Further away to the left there are more old wooden buildings and vintage wagons.
