Just finished Alexander Hamilton by Ron Chernow, which of course was the inspiration for the hit Broadway show. Truly a fascinating life, where sometimes fact is stranger than fiction. It makes one wonder what might have happened had Hamilton's life not been cut short.

This quote stood out to me:

"His faith in Americans never quite matched his faith in America itself." It was like he had a crystal ball.

My Family & Other Rock Stars by Tiffany Murray was one of Joe's favourite reads of 2024 (we had a terrific event for the hardback release).

To celebrate the paperback release, we took it on a trip to fab & groovy Thorne Records, our close neighbours and a superb Indie vinyl store.

A total delight, packed with musical memory nuggets

"One of Graydon’s wizard wheezes at Spy was to send extremely small cheques to extremely rich people to see who would bother to bank them. The first cheques were for $1.11 and half the recipients succumbed. So then Spy sent cheques for $0.64, and 13 people, including Rupert Murdoch, banked them. The next cheques were for $0.13 and only two people banked them. One was Adnan Khashoggi, a notorious arms dealer; the other was Donald Trump"

Today In Labor History March 26, 1918: American anarchist Philip Grosser wrote about being tortured in the prison on Alcatraz Island, while serving time there for refusing to serve in World War I. By 1920, he was the only draft resistor still serving time at Alcatraz. Alexander Berkman referred to him as "one of [my] finest comrades."

Becoming Beauvoir by Kate Kirkpatrick, 2019

A symbol of liberated womanhood, Simone de Beauvoir's unconventional relationships inspired and scandalised her generation. A philosopher, writer, and feminist icon, she won prestigious literary prizes and transformed the way we think about gender with The Second Sex. But despite her successes, she wondered if she had sold herself short.

Maria Shriver is opening up about loss and grief in a big way. In her new book I Am Maria — a collection of poems and reflections by the author — Shriver, 69, revealed she was unable to get off the floor of her hotel room after learning of her husband Arnold Schwarzenegger’s infidelity. The news came soon after the deaths of both of her parents. @usweekly reports:
