EFF is resigning from the w3c over DRM and the Encrypted Media Extensions standardization process. This was probably inevitable once w3c leadership abandoned consensus in this arena, but it's still such a bummer to see https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2017/09/open-letter-w3c-director-ceo-team-and-membership
@xor Sad news.
@xor I don't grok the politics here, but is there a better option for the EFF to achieve their goals? Outsider perspective on the DRM is that it's hard to imagine it as consumer-friendly move, benefiting the ideals of an open internet. I'm glad to have sharp people and organizations following and working on these issues. Does this just bankrupt the w3c as on organization?
@K_REY_C speaking as an outsider here, as I left EFF at the beginning of this year, but: there are ways for EFF to influence w3c policy that don't require membership, so it's not totally bankrupt from here.
@xor good to know. Thanks for your reply!
Reading that letter reminds me, Cory Doctorow is one hell of a writer and one hell of an activist. We who fight for a free and open internet are very lucky to have him.
