The new release of Signal has support for encrypting and sending arbitrary files. That's a very big deal: for many users it has long been an unsolved problem to securely share documents or recordings, and now it's as easy and sending a text. Update out now for Desktop, iOS, and Android!

@xor and they have given up Google push services, I gather! This is good news!

@xor That is awesome news. 😃

Is there any word on a desktop client that is independent of Chrome?

@DivineOmega I haven't heard anything about that

@xor is there a simple easy to use Android app that uses decent but not via level encryption to protect a single text file as a way of keeping track of e.g. Mastodon instance user name/poo password.

Not some elaborate password manager just authenticate, view or edit file, then encypt before save

@Ronkjeffries sorry, I'm not an Android user right now and don't know what's out there

@xor @Ronkjeffries for passwords, I'd actually recommend keepass2android. But for general file encryption on #Android, you want OpenKeychain.

@xor Telegram has this feature, up to 1.5GB.

@xor Does it now has support for Android's granular permissions? It kinda always felt weird that the Android app asks so much permissions upfront.

@resir014 I don't know, I'm not using it on Android

@resir014 @xor I just checked: It doesn't. I also hate that.

And @rustyk5 is right: Signal audio and video calling is really great and usually seamless. I had an important hour-long audio call last week and I'd say Signal handled it better than a cell phone line would've.

@xor very interesting. Still wish I could add my own keys to it - but I guess that's quite a niche use case.

@xor "for desktop". A chrome-only extention isn't exactly a desktop program.

@zatnosk is sending this toot better than not sending this toot?

@xor this is great. One of my biggest gripes had been not being able to share contacts as vcards via Signal.
