by tech standards he is "old" (in early middle age) and he was a successful film producer and entrepreneur in his native country (Netherlands) until his late 40s.
he could quite easily have made enough €€€ to be in semi-retirement and in North European countries with good national healthcare especially for older generations, its culturally normal to try and use your later years to benefit younger generations (but Gen X ers might be the last generation able to do this)
@veer66 @vascorsd to be fair this is the case for a lot of FOSS developers in Northern Europe and is why FOSS does reasonably well here.
Those who (maybe understandably) curse Blender for having a steep learning curve and a UI from the late 1990s maybe forget its essentially a leftover from a mixed freeware/commercial venture of that era that has been opensourced (there's also another pro video editor like this, I forget its name though)
