One of the problems with questions about sentience is that it's just an obfuscated way of asking are there things that are similar to humans. I could conceive of something capable of perceiving the universe that would never invent integers (e.g., thinking wind, or water), and whether that thing would ever qualify as sentient really just depends on what you want "sentient" to be at that point. Why would the wind care?
