Still having a bit of trouble figuring out how all of this works, and what the "best practices" are for keeping servers, handles, and general use straight. Was Twitter this confusing to get into? I don't know that non-techies will switch if the core concepts are this confusing. Maybe it's just me.

Things that suck about Mastodon: it would be veeery hard to rebuild the network that I've got on Twitter, and I'm not even that much of a social butterfly there.
Things that Mastodon does better: GIF avatars!
Something that Mastodon doesn't seem to have an answer for: What stops a user from impersonating another user on a different instance? Does it mean we're back to signing keys and shit?
