Thought of the day: when there is a user I like in principle, but makes posts I don't connect with regularly (so I'd rather not see them in my feed) do I:
A) unfollow them
B) keep following them, but put them on mute
Thoughts?
@nickfarr why do you say that?
@shivian I have a thing about following everyone who follows me, but I don't necessarily connect with everyone's posts either. Also, I occasionally dip back into the firehose to see what's going on with everyone, and occasionally revise my thoughts on who to mute, who not to mute, etc.
@shivian Unfollow. Muting is disingenuous.
@shivian I think you should unfollow them, but if you're worried you could maybe send em a message? I'm a big believer in cultivating your tl to be what you wanna see
@shivian are they on your instance? if you unfollow they'd still show up in local timeline so you could see them there but not your follows. If you mute, I think you won't see any of their posts.
@shivian
a is a better option, you will still see them on federal timeline but if you mute them you won't see them at all...
@shivian
on the other band i found muting quite usefull to eliminate unwanted feeds from the federal timeline...
@bumbar that I do for sure 😄
@shivian
quite nice avatar you're having...
@bumbar thanks 😄
@shivian I'd mute them. They're still on your list, but you don't have their stuff clogging your feed.
Depends what you mean by "don't connect with", I guess. If they're nice people but just post annoying stuff—posts that are stupid or aren't relevant to you—I'd be hesitant to sever the connection. I only flat-out unfollow when someone really pisses me off—like offensive political opinions.
@shivian Mute 'em.
