Here's to celebrating Independence Day with friends. (As seen on Essex Street, Salem MA)

this awesome little tool allows you to contain a small website in a url. no hosting required, very portable.

geez. i can think of a million ways to use this for very creative little projects.

Fun fact: pressing enter will trigger a click on the first submit button in a form. I'm not sure whether this is a standards thing or just something that browsers tend to do. That behavior is reasonably accessible, but binding to the form's submit event still seems less brittle.

I accidentally typed `nom install` and now I wish that was actually the command to install npm packages.

Paul Ford wrote a beautiful piece in Bloomberg about what GitHub is. I wish more technical writers could write like him:

When designing a user interface, imagine some old woman using it, say Margaret Hamilton, and she's clicking your app's buttons and saying to you, as old people do,

"Young whippersnapper, when I was your age, I sent 24 people to the ACTUAL MOON with my software in 4K of RAM and here I am clicking your button and it takes ten seconds to load a 50 megabyte video ad and then it crashes

I'm not even ANGRY with you, I'm just disappointed."

So the self-care bot is great and all, but sometimes it feels like I'm following my Mom on Mastodon.

Sound advice on Redux, from its creator:

"...if you鈥檙e just learning React, don鈥檛 make Redux your first choice. Instead learn to think in React. Come back to Redux if you find a real need for it, or if you want to try something new."

That advice works with with Vue and Vuex as well!

I wrote a piece for Smashing Magazine about SVG and pointer-events. My first for the publication. 馃槉

" My struggle to learn React" (by Pattern Lab creator Brad Frost) is refreshingly honest. I think we've all had these sorts of experiences.

"12 Things Everyone Should Understand About Tech" is a thought-provoking read. Would love to see sources for statements like "Only about 15% of programmers work at startups," though. (via @baldur )

It's great that Fitbit now offers period tracking! Can we please stop using the euphemism "female health tracking", though? As a dude, I promise we're capable of hearing words like "menstruation" without having a complete meltdown. 馃榾

It seems like lots of major GitHub repos (request, create-react-app, node-sass, Microsoft PXT) are getting warnings about the same potentially vulnerable npm dependency.

It's probably not a big problem and might even be a false positive, but either way it highlights how tricky security in the npm ecosystem can be.

Amazon's choice for the Nokia 6 is... the Mate SE. 馃槙

I'd love to know how they come up with this stuff.

Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare. ~ Audre Lorde

Async/await is awesome, but it can be tempting to await all the things and sacrifice concurrency in favor of readability.

Here are some tips on avoiding that problem!

this quote from Bunnie Huang is, i think, probably the best justification for proactive correction of biases i've seen
