Imagine having 30 million users in a volatile, conflict-ridden country, and not a single member of staff who speaks their language.

Silicon Valley thinks we are in a moment of “anti-tech sentiment”

Loooool no we just finally woke up the masses to the San Francisco business model. Notice that nobody’s mad at Intel! Nobody’s complaining about how VLC killed a woman testing some machinery. Nobody thinks propaganda in Mint Linux tainted a presidential election. No buddy that’s an anti-corruption sentiment you’re catching. You have a corrupted business model.

“One promise of ride-hailing companies like Uber and Lyft was fewer cars clogging city streets…studies suggest the opposite: that ride-hailing companies are pulling riders off buses, subways, bicycles and their own feet and putting them in cars instead.” apnews.com/e47ebfaa1b184130984

People’s tastes are being targeted by some really abstract predictive algorithms (for lack of a better term). Nobody seems to really like it and it’s totally going overboard imo. At what point will it all stop being meant for people? Will it start to lean entirely in a direction of generated content? I mean it’s basically starting already (in very small ways) that’s why I found that article interesting. [end]

by which I mean the idea that all work, and especially clerical and knowledge work, is ultimately reducible to a computer program. not to say that there's never any redundancy, but through experience I've found that (e.g.) when a clerical process involves a paper form that looks redundant, there's usually a good reason for it—like stakeholders with slightly different legal requirements—and engineering out the redundancy also engineers out the affordances and subtleties that make a system useful

I remember really wanting this t-shirt as a teen. now I realize it's a pretty good summary of the toxic relationship between the tech industry and labor (all kinds of labor, not just tech labor) thinkgeek.com/product/374d/

“Never believe that anti-Semites are completely unaware of the absurdity of their replies. They know that their remarks are frivolous, open to challenge. But they are amusing themselves, for it is their adversary who is obliged to use words responsibly, since he believes in in words. The anti-Semites have a right to play. They even like to play with discourse for, by giving ridiculous reason, they discredit the seriousness of their interlocutors. They delight in acting in bad faith, since they do not seek to persuade by sound argument but to intimidate and disconcert.” -Sartre

Found a gem inside that excellent response to the Idiot Google Guy about the Paradox of Tolerance - extranewsfeed.com/tolerance-is

'[Tolerance] is an agreement to live in peace, not an agreement to be peaceful no matter the conduct of others. A peace treaty is not a suicide pact.'
