Ok, so let's talk about the pirated version of #StarWarsTheLastJedi that I viewed recently.

It's a Chinese rip and the most fascinating thing is that the first time you're presented with a major character, there's this small caption/explanation of who they are.

Maybe this is common in other film markets, but it blew my god damn mind.

@sonicbooming I have seen this in Japanese home video releases of Western historical dramas, where the audience can’t be expected to have more than a vague idea of who a Roman emperor or pope was.

Lately in the Western tradition, this backstory is often reduced to a Blade Runner-type textual prologue or eliminated altogether, as it tends to trip up the purely visual/aural storytelling that Western filmmakers prefer.
