Thank you for all those sharing your opinion with us here! Especially around AI and performance improvements. We hope it doesn't surprise you that we feel very much the same about where #BigTech AI is headed, which is exactly why we're trying to make a difference with off-by-default AI features in Nextcloud that, if desired, can help you host local AI models of your choice that don't send your personal data away to the Big 5.
For those who don't want AI: no problem at all, Nextcloud has always been modular by design, and AI is optional and off-by-default for this very reason.
For performance improvements and bugs: we agree, let's squash them! Every release (every day, actually!) we release a ton of bug fixes and performance improvements to help make Nextcloud faster, smoother, and more of a pleasure to use - hopefully for everyone from sysadmins to family members.
If there is a bug or feature you would really love to see in Nextcloud, or vote for it's priority, please share with us - we would love to hear your thoughts, ideas, and passion for a particular feature: https://github.com/nextcloud/server/issues
If you're interested in reading about performance improvements from our previous release, from faster apps by switching to Vite, to database sharding improvements, server-side performance improvements... lots! - have a look: https://nextcloud.com/blog/nextcloud-hub9/#Performance_and_scalability_%F0%9F%9A%84
We're also glad for the feedback on our messaging here - we can do better to share the parts of Nextcloud we're proud of that is more appropriate for you, our audience and community and fans here.
Keep the feedback coming!
I would really love it if Talk didn't make me manually scroll down every time someone sends a new comment. Every other chat software I've ever used scrolls to the latest item automatically.
@EverydayMoggie @nextcloud That would really be annoying yeah. I saw something flying by that fixes this in some corner cases, but it definitely does not happen with every message.
If that still happens for you all the time feel free to create a bug report and add as much information as possible to it, so we can try to reproduce it.
@nextcloud If you feel the same about "Big Tech AI" then why are you supporting it, adding it and promoting it?
Why not set an example and show other companies you don't need to have all this AI bullshit to be successful.
This AI phase truly needs to die off and go away as soon as possible and all of these companies, regardless of how big or small they are, need to stop jumping on the bandwagon and putting it in everything and shoving it down our throats.
@nextcloud regarding that #Nextcloud AI, so far as I know, I have installed models taken from university shares to power the image recognition in Photos and it is useful. Not as comprehensive as Google, but I hope that will come (I'm running NC30 on a pi5) I can find many photos by people or objects, while knowing this knowledge is here, on MY hard drive. On the other hand, it is hopeless at identifying music genres; fortunately I don't believe in genres.
@nextcloud Setting aside general issues with AI and the audience here, I think another problem around it with regards to Nextcloud is the amount of dev time going in to it. For sure, bugs are getting squashed, but there are a lot of major issues still that could use some extra hands it seems. There are problems with the Mail, for example, which just make it unusable - some AI related, some not.
@nextcloud It’s nice to know replies are being read here though, thanks! :)
@mez @nextcloud yeah things are never perfect - but over 90% of dev work literally goes into fixing and improving existing things. Out of our entire engineering only 2 do ai features - and they also have other work… so if we would drop all ai, we would loose a ton of customers and certainly not be able to do more non-ai things… the reality is that these abilities are simply important to many users.
@jospoortvliet @nextcloud That’s interesting to hear, thanks! So it sounds like the comms from NC promote AI more than its share compared to engineering.
I get there’s a reason for that: I’m assuming it’s larger enterprise clients asking for it, which drives both the work and marketing.
Honestly, info like this and the recent comms from the NC account are great to hear for the rest of us who don’t want the tech
@mez @nextcloud Thanks Philip. Yes, you are correct, we get customer demand, so we have to talk about our efforts. It is a marketing reality that it is just not effective to talk loudly about bug fixes - while AI advancements get plenty press coverage.
@nextcloud please for the love of God just make the app sync my files reliably and work quickly and have buttons and notifications and basic features that actually do things instead of silently failing
@wilbr Oh no! This does not sounds like fun... sorry about that. Could you give a bit more details? Perhaps even as far as reporting these issues to help us address them?
@nextcloud just generally focusing on Android/mobile app development over shiny new features. Anyone who tries using the mobile apps as their daily driver (i.e. auto photo upload) will notice rough edges that haven't been touched in years.
@wilbr got it, thanks!
