renamed a function, changed all instances of the old name to the new name, and a test that is unrelated to the name change is now broken


oh, it's because the original author was doing "if variable:" when they meant "if variable is not None:" 🤦‍♂️

a forgiveable mistake, if it weren't for two facts: this person wrote a book on learning python and this person is the sort that will berate people for making simple mistakes
