It was so long ago that I came up with this idea that it was over on my Twitter account, but! I finally got my “irrigation filter” which appears to be the same kind of part and filter mesh as and so this week I will be working on adding a micro plastics filter to my clothes washing machine. No pictures because my laundry area in basement is not photogenic.

Here’s the $16 USD filter I’m going to try to use and the setup guide for the other laundry filter should also apply, but the sizes are different:
I’m just hoping that this has enough flow that it can be used for a load at a time without overflowing to the other hose (both output hoses will go into a normal lint trap)

Also, I wonder if you could make printer filament out of what gets trapped in the filter? 🤔🤔🤔


@jjg it’s most likely all sorts of synthetic and natural lint fibers all mixed together — probably not? Grey water would be more trouble than it is worth; my laundry is down in my basement — or else I was thinking about using a 50 gallon plastic barrel as a gravity separator and then pump through a filter from that.

I wonder how toxic this stuff is. Like, could you let it drain through an aggregate filter buried in the yard to capture the particles and have safe water come out the bottom back into the ground?

That way you don't have to clean it and you trap the crud w/o trusting the waste management folks won't just dump it back in a river 😅

@jjg we want to trap the micro plastics and (for lack of a better option) permanently enclose them inside a plastic bag that goes to the landfill. My worry is that with buried aggregate, the plastic is likely to eventually migrate through to the environment. The only solution I can see would be to send the entire filter aggregate to the landfill in bags — hence mentioning a gravity filter tank after the metal mesh filter and then filtering out the liquid pumped out (micro plastics may float)

@jjg filtering with aggregate is better suited to cleaning biological material out of grey water / black water by way of microbes, as far as I know.

@jjg next time I see you, I can bring a bag of 3D printer junk/supports for recycling!
