one thing I really love about HK is that customer service/retail workers don't pretend to like you or be happy to see you. in the US it feels like if your a paying customer that's the equivalent of holding a gun to someone's head, it just feels really creepy and awful how compliant they are. I always want to be like, I've had retail jobs most of my life, I know you're not actually happy to see me, I'm sorry you have to pretend to be

When capitalism gets more hardcore, these things happen all the time - now I see all kinds of new job openings with customer relations, lead customer agents, customer BJobs of every kind...how much humiliation can a person tolerate? I mean, should I make a bar code tatoo on my head?

But Ikea is cool: they have freelance designers designing their products, people who work in their warehouses (oops-stores) only drive their stackers around, and you end up seeing no cashier if you do things right and order from their catalogue. Capitalism at its best...

@live i actually sincerely enjoy it, and it must come across, because i make 2 to 3x the tips co-workers do. i do have the freedom to tell people to fuck off, which makes being pleasant so much easier.

@lia agreed, I love it here and I could see myself living here for extended periods of time, which is not how I feel about most places even in the states

@live this is result of an attitude - if I buy at your shop, I buy your soul.
