I may have successfully bored someone to sleep with programming talk after they complained they weren't sleepy. (waiting for timeout=600s to confirm)

Meanwhile, in the other dimension (yes, this network name came from this band name)

Their timeline is pretty funny to read :p

Some group of Internet Bad People is inevitably going to run an instance to spy on its users' DMs.

The real value add of Mastodon is giving everyone an excuse to finally put something on all the weird domains they've been squatting

When/if I set up my own instance, what would be the process to migrate? Or is it better if I set up now?

So all this stuff about folks setting up their own instances, anyone from the ages of late 30's and up, see ANY similarities of BBSs yet? Its smacking me in the face everytime i see someone asking about adding features or how to solve the federated problems:)

OH: A: "Nobody is worth turning into a shawarma over"
B: "100% Expert Chickens Agree!"

Hello Mastodon! Any conservationists, scientists, photographers, filmmakers out there tooting?

The fluffy elephant on the frontpage is drawn by @cutewitchirl. I wonder how she feels about it being in all these magazines :D

It's kinda weird to think about a social network where businesses own their own presences, rather than relying on a capricious third party service like Twitter or Facebook. Imagine NBC or The Verge running a Mastodon instance for their reporters to toot from, or Bethesda operating an instance for PR and customer support. No more lost business when Facebook changes their algorithms again because they need more money from boosted posts.

Weird, right?

they can take our tweets, but they'll never take our toots!

Got to say, the Mastodon API is really clean. One bit that sticks out is where it redirects to a web page if your login fails instead of something like {'error': "login failed'}.

APIs that sometimes return HTML instead of JSON. *shakes head*

And if you use an instance - pitch in to pay for it, someone's gotta pay the bills of the instance won't stay.
