Disabled people, neurodivergent people, and/or people affected by ableism:
MetaFilter.com has been hosting a series of discussions among disabled members, and the latest one is up https://metatalk.metafilter.com/25447/Disability-ableism-thread-access-intimacy-taking-care-of-each-other
Includes an intro to the ethics of care. Also venting.
So I'm working on a static site generator for myself and I was curious about the generated page weight. A blank page with no content with the associated style.css weighs in at 2863 bytes. (Yes, bytes, not kilobytes)
Only CSS, HTML5, and an inlined blank favicon. Using semantic and accessible elements and styling, it's got nearly perfect a11y scores and renders well both on desktop and mobile and looks (IMO) quite good.
The web doesn't have to be bloated. Fight the bloat!
Over the past few years I've noticed myself stopping to do custom tweaks on my own system, and instead working to fix the underlying issue for everyone.
I finally wrote my thoughts about this down in a more coherent form https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/2020/01/17/doing-things-that-scale
I like how I don't have to immediately understand every struggle and intersection of identity as long as I just honor the simple requests of the most vulnerable party in any situation.
- "Call me by these pronouns." Sure.
- "Don't call people this slur." Sure.
- "Consider voting against this guy, he's trying to murder me." Sure.
- "You're treating me in a way I don't like. Stop." Sure, sorry.
- "Some people say *thing* is bad but others say it's okay." Thanks I'll read.
It's not always this simple but ~90% of the time it really is.
In the past I've felt a lot of pressure, guilt, and anxiety at the end of a year.
I just wanted to reach out and say to all of you:
You are enough.
Whether you had goals and accomplished them or simply survived this year, I am glad you're here.
You don't need to justify your existence to anyone.
Time is an artificial construct; the end of the year doesn't have to mean anything unless you want it to.
You're amazing, and you're here, and that's enough.
Also, if you're wondering how far is a first alpha release of Akira, you can track our progress and missing features from here: https://github.com/akiraux/Akira/issues/206
Hey folks, Alex here, just a quick heads up that I will be working on Akira full time for the first 3 weeks of January, so expect more updates and news.
Meanwhile, some much needed improvements and fixes are on their way: https://github.com/akiraux/Akira/pull/225
Home Alone 3 (spoilers)
Just started Home Alone 3. Haven't seen it before. It's on Netflix, so why not?
It's still a John Hughes movie, but doesn't star anyone from the previous movies.
It is a somehow a spy movie with crooks searching for a missing microchip that was misplaced in a classic airport swap of identical bags. And it stars Scarlett Johansson (as the sister).
