Mastodon's concept of instances reminds me of IRC.
Many IRC servers. Some are very popular with many channels (Freenode). i.e Federated Mastodon {.social, .technology,...}
Some are not as popular and attract a cult style userbase.
Once can be a user of many different servers (instances).
Please do not boost toots from the instance sh//itposter.cl//ub. It is a great url, but it's full of nazis. I don't want to see them in my timeline and I will block anyone from there on sight. If you run an instance, please blocklist them.
If you're from that instance/have an account there and are annoyed at being generalised like this because you reckon you're one of the good ones, ask yourself why you're okay with being on an instance infamous for hosting nazis.
So twitter is for news and this is for things I actually care about from real people. I like it this way.

OK y'all! http://tooter.today is live and ready to help your friends find places to toot from! It provides scored instances in an easy-to-use fashion for new users and helps onboard them to tinier instances. Please help me load-test it by boosting it across the fediverse! :)

We need to entice more #anthropology folk to mastodon.
Avoiding work by following people with similar interest hashtags. Probably should prep for the meeting that I'm running in a half an hour... *searches next hashtag*
People criticizing Mastodon are doing so by comparing it to VC funded apps with an exit strategy. When you're designed for fun rather than funding, it doesn't matter what pundits think, only that your users are having a good time and can grow the ecosystem. From those metrics? Mastodon is kicking ass. My recommendation? Invest (your time) ;-)
Current amusement: people who have clearly signed up just to give their opinion on why Mastodon is meh.
Bonus points if their reason is 'because blockchain'.
