Grading understanding: arguably makes sense.

Grading experimentation: bad.

Surely the anxiety of 'getting the wrong result' is the beginning of the end for earnest prediction and honest analysis?

@maltimore right, that's what got me thinking about it. But it's funny to think that this process begins in school even.

We are *not* encouraged to embrace possible failure, although science should rightly become an increasingly 'failing' process as time proceeds. Both in our early education, and in our continued careers.
