My advice to new mastodon servers: get help from people with experience moderating other communities. It's the best predictor of survival

Citation: online communities with moderators who gained experience elsewhere are more likely to survive over time: pdfs.semanticscholar.org/553b/

I just realized why this is so cool. We're having conversations, not shouting at each other.

@desk_of_jiksun I think you will find that a curated list of people you trust is a more than adequate substitute for the best algorithms.

For those who dont know, the federated timeline displays all the activity from all the people on other instances who are followed by people on your instance.

It is therefore very good practice to follow as many interesting people from other instances as possible. We are the ropes binding this distributed system together.

@desk_of_jiksun definitely this experiment seems like universal id or bust...kind of my biggest anxiety as i don't know if that's even possible now. but yeah

@desk_of_jiksun yea you have to make a duplicate account. You can export and import a list of people you follow and a list of people you've blocked. At this stage account migration is not well catered for. On the bright side you can be active on as many instances as you want...

Maybe what we need is a block chain powered Mastodon so we can all have unique user IDs.

@desk_of_jiksun the federated timeline of whatever server you're account is on is what you see -- its composed of all the public toots of all the people on other servers whom people on your server follow (plus all public toots from your own server)

does the federation protocol make affordances for migration? i.e. if I become at-glyph-at-mydomain instead of at-glyph-at-mastodon-dot-social, can I take my followers with me or do I have to keep bleating out that they should follow the new identifier?

So lets be clear here...

The end game for mastodon is Pirate/Troll instances in their own little blocked network.

There is no way this will not happen, and I would actually call this the most accurate success metric.

We will know we have won when we have a healthy ecosystem of trolls... in a separate network... in a box... far away from me.

Not saying I'm not enjoying my instance, but let's say one wanted to move to another instance to talk to locals there, how would one go about it?

Can't remember the last time I stayed up so late, diving into a multitude of random conversations with such interesting people.

WHAT IS HAPPENING.

And so it begins...

@desk_of_jiksun @kevinmenzel @tylercox follow us on mastodon pls we're begging you

Is the federated timeline basically the biggest live chatroom ever? Genuine question here.

GOOD NIGHT MASTOFRIENDS.

See you on the other side. Follow me to let me know you exist in this crazy Mastoverse.

While we're all still tootin' about tooting, can we talk about the PURPOSE of Mastodon?

Is this a news feed or is this a massively interconnected IRC channel? What do people expect to see on Mastodon?!

There really needs to be a better way of filtering and / or channeling when the Firehose of Toots happens. Or we're just gonna be drowning in toots.

@desk_of_jiksun we're human, we swear! thanks for checking tho
