With all the talk of #Signal and #distributed #IM lately, I thought I'd go a step further: here's a roundup of secure off-the-grid messengers: https://changelog.complete.org/archives/10205-roundup-of-secure-messengers-with-off-the-grid-capabilities-distributed-mesh-messengers These all use strong #encryption, provide #privacy, and can be used without any Internet connection at all.
#briar is an interesting hybrid; while it uses #Bluetooth instead of longer-range #LoRa, it doesn't need any extra hardware and can route IMs over #Tor, #Bluetooth, or local #Wifi (even w/o Internet). @briar

Big Tech's growing monopoly power means that more and more people are looking for secure alternatives to Gmail that won't read their emails or profit off their data. Here's what makes our Swiss-based email service a good candidate for the top spot: https://protonmail.com/blog/gmail-alternative/

WhatsApp's new terms of service mean it will be sharing personal user data with its parent company Facebook.

OMG Y'all HairyLarry turned me onto Yunohost and holy cow! If you have been wanting to run your own server at home this stuff is the real deal. Integrated LetsEncrypt, email, and everything, even dyndns is setup for you if you use their setup. I'm really excited as it also has software I'd never heard of before like Grocy and Firefly III. Really cool project if you want to run stuff at home but you're tired of administering servers by the time you get home and just wanna push a button and go. Anyway, its the first excitement I've had in 2021. Oh they also have peertube and mastodon so I might move to a single user instance over there soon too.
