I think it's long enough I've ignored the affront that is those Häagen-Dazs bars sitting in my freezer. 🍦🤔

Rose bushes are too much work. Just sayin'.

We had about a dozen people over for pot luck. It was a bit noisy. Katie Kat decided to hide under the duvet. mastodon.xyz/media/g4o57GFSy6_

After humiliating loss in Anaheim, Edmonton doing MUCH better in game 6. After 2, it's 7-1 Oilers.

Draisaitl has 3! mastodon.xyz/media/_TcEtyo7xy4

Just edited stuff in my neighbourhood on openstreetmap.org. Their editor is much improved, relative to a few years ago (when it baffled me!).

Apparently @status for a given masto instance is NOT a convention. It exists on mastodon.xyz.

Discovered @status on the masto instance I'm on, mastodon.xyz. Useful information there (both for tech heads & muggles). Wonder if @status@some.masto.instance is a convention...

Still more tech journalism on Mastodon: "Mastodon cannot survive with such a silly name. It needs a more serious and business-friendly name, such as Google, Yahoo, or Hulu."

oh dear. My local masto instance responded with an HTTP Error 504 Gateway timeout.

Sadness. Loneliness...

As a rule, climbing into a box makes Spencer very happy. This time, however, was less fun than usual... mastodon.xyz/media/LuWKwqKMEpJ

Giving a talk this evening to a small, local crowd. Will be on "safety on the Internet". Aimed at the confused and frightened.

This should work. I've been confused and frightened on the 'net for a long time.

If I move one neighbour onto 2FA or a password manager then I'll be happy.

Watching a not-for-profit struggle to be maximally collaborative. Endearing but sometimes they sure could use a Benevolent Dictator to make a decision!

A story of Trust in a Complicated World...

I turn on Brave's Payments feature. Brave says that if I want to buy BTC I can buy them from Cubit.

I click on Brave's Cubit option. I was there earlier today and LastPass (my pwd manager) offers to fill in my creds.

I'm logged into Cubit and they want to verify my identity. I click Verify which takes me to IDnow.

IDnow wants an image of my passport(!).

Brave & LastPass I'm comfortable with. Cubit & IDnow I've never heard of...

Paying 1% of the going rate for a ticket to watch our team in playoffs... on jumbo screen, while they play in another city. Can't afford $500! 😳

Block lists should always be public: it helps maintain moderator/admin accountability. If people really are being terrible enough to break the rules of your server/instance, everybody should know why so that there is a clear demarcation of where rules are being enforced.

If you put someone on a block/silence/mute list and you feel uneasy with other people seeing that list, perhaps you should reconsider why you are adding them.

Does this make sense...

I tend to a the birdsite account for my neighbourhood organization. Many small businesses from across the city follow us, I assume because some small %age follow back, thus assisting their marketing. To me, this dilutes the value in the list of our followers.

With masto's highly distributed net, follow-spam would happen less often, increasing the usefulness of our list of followers...??

TIL "Windows 10 Creators Update" is simply a Win10 update.

I had seen lots of references to Win10 Creators but I assumed it was an alternative to, say, "Windows Home".

Looks like my wife's plain ol' Win10 machine will get the "Creators" update. 😕
