Finally wrote a post that's been stewing for a while: What You Miss By Only Checking GitHub

Many researchers, entrepreneurs, open source sustainability commentators, et al. assume that GitHub activity is a reasonable proxy for FLOSS as a whole. It's not.

harihareswara.net/posts/2022/w

Goes over some examples, a marketing graphic that made my eyebrows go up, research about how unrepresentative GitHub can be, and some tools to try.

in sum: they were faced with the choice of dropping kiwifarms or having their entire australian operations forcibly shut down by the government.

Australia doesn’t have a “first amendment” or any such romantic attachments to “freedom of speech” so laws heavily favor safety over abusive speech

"..and this is our PoS terminal..."

my brain after being given several seconds of time to think: I know that means point of sale

my brain a nanosecond after reading "pos terminal": heh, piece of shit

we know more about the literal infinite cosmos than we do about the depths of our own oceans and that's pretty cool in a way

Tomorrow is the two year anniversary of my LLC! I've been working for myself (as in, buying my own equipment and insurance and representing myself) 100% of that time, and I'm actually kind of amazed that I made it this far (with the help of my partner Mo and my family of course) in the most expensive city in the US!!

With scrupulous study and veils of bulldada being lifted, it appears that emoji reactions are implemented in more than one way. So I will try to support the various ways in #Epicyon.

This is the disadvantage of there being nobody maintaining the ActivityPub spec. This is what "rough consensus" on the internet looks like. It manifests as in code complexity of needing to accomodate diverse implementations of the same thing.

Mastodon, of course, doesn't implement emoji reactions at all, but given that this is an expected feature in social software it probably will eventually.

Boosting a post without faving it feels like the correct action to say "I don't like this, but I need others to suffer too"

I'm thinking about getting a new MacBook Pro but I don't know if I should wait for them to get M2 chips

I've been working on my site redesign for like 8 months now and I still have such a long way to go 😩

If we called it “applied statistics” instead of “machine learning” or “artificial intelligence” we’d probably get fewer people asking if the computer is alive.

every time a game dev closes its community site/forum and moves everything to discord I die a little inside. even if it's a dev I've never cared about it.

It's an absolutely head ass trend and it needs to stop.

I hope all of my euro mufos stay cool and hydrated today, whatever it takes. Stay safe out there.

This, right here, is why companies everywhere should not use social media alone for service status updates.

The fact that Proton's status page says we should go to Twitter for "more information" means that Proton is less accessible to folks without Twitter accounts. And that's no good.

I'm really really hating the phrase "team velocity" right now.

What XMPP apps are people using these days?
